Ad Hawk: Bon Voyage, Barack! (McCain Airs First Negative Ad While Obama Is Away)

Popular Videos – McCain aired the first real negative ad of the 2008 general-election. McCain accuses Obama of 3 offenses: he "never held Senate a hearing on Afghanistan"; he "hasn't been to Iraq in years"; and he "vot[ed] against troop funding." While the complaints sound damning when simplified, they crumble upon closer examination.

White House sends press corps al-Maliki's praise for Obama plan

Politics – An embarrassing slip up, when an aide mistakenly sent to the news media a Reuters article saying Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki backs Barack Obama's troop withdrawal plan. Its timing is particularly embarrassing as Bush's "general time horizon" for withdrawing U.S. troops is being cited by some as resembling Obama's redeployment pro

Susan Estrich: It Should Be a Democratic Year

Politics – July polls don't tell you who's going to win in November. Just ask President Dukakis or President Gore, both of whom were well ahead in July and went on to lose in the fall (although Mr. Gore still doesn't quite see it that way).

The Audacity of Vanity

Politics – He figures it would be a nice backdrop. The supporting cast -- a cheering audience and a few fainting frauleins -- would be a picturesque way to bolster his foreign policy credentials.

Dr. Susan Rice Bashes McCain on Afghanistan Policy

Politics – After years of denying it was a problem, McCain woke up and discovered Afghanistan, but has no credible plan. He wants to surge in Afghanistan without reducing troops in Iraq, which the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says is impossible. He wants to balance our budget through troop withdrawals which he opposes. The whole thing is illogical.

News – Republicans blocked a Democratic bill to spur exploration in areas where drilling has already been sanctioned. A supermajority was needed. Democrats were calling the bluff of Republicans on their persistent demands for more domestic production. "Drill on the leases you have or let somebody else do it," said Steny H. Hoyer (D-MA).
