  Bernie Madoff may indeed be a scoundrel --- or at least have been led to BECOME one --- through efforts to DEFER in perpetuity (or as close thereto as possible) actually FACING UP to financial realities HIMSELF, and also the FORCING of others who "invested with him" to do likewise. It is not difficult to surmise that he probably never INTENDED any such result, but must have just "kept on treading water" while drifting ever deeper out ...
