Democrats try to spur oil exploration

News – Republicans blocked a Democratic bill to spur exploration in areas where drilling has already been sanctioned. A supermajority was needed. Democrats were calling the bluff of Republicans on their persistent demands for more domestic production. "Drill on the leases you have or let somebody else do it," said Steny H. Hoyer (D-MA).

Dr. Susan Rice Bashes McCain on Afghanistan Policy

Politics – After years of denying it was a problem, McCain woke up and discovered Afghanistan, but has no credible plan. He wants to surge in Afghanistan without reducing troops in Iraq, which the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says is impossible. He wants to balance our budget through troop withdrawals which he opposes. The whole thing is illogical.

Politics – In May, President Bush revealed that he had given up playing golf because of the Iraq war. "I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal," said Bush. Apparently though, he's fine with golf as long as it raises money for GOP candidates.

McCain Refers To Czechoslovakia, A Non-Existent Country

Politics – At his press avail today, John McCain referenced current relations between Russia and, um, a non-existent country. We're nitpicking a bit here. But McCain is running on his supposed foreign policy superiority. And the GOP and McCain would hit Obama as a foreign policy greenhorn based on less than this.

An Inconvenient Display of Democracy

Politics – Whether further withdrawal proceeds on a timetable or is calibrated to conditions on the ground seems less important than beginning the process of turning Iraq over to the Iraqis, who are expressing a strong desire to regain genuine sovereignty.

McCain Math

Politics – SEN. JOHN McCain says that President McCain would balance the federal budget by 2013. The plan is not credible. The Congressional Budget Office projects a deficit of $443 billion in 2013 if President Bush's tax cuts are extended, as Mr. McCain wants. But Mr. McCain is proposing far more tax cuts.
