I used to think of myself as sort of liberal Republican, but I've been pushed to the Left by the current administration. I suggest that government can do a good job in some things and that when it can, it should be encouraged to--an example is the VA hospital system, which is now the best in the country. I don't believe capitalism is the state religion or that it has been particularly successful when you consider the vast opportunities that have existed in the US regardless of what economic system we've employed. I think government's job is to cast a skeptical eye on business, with a goal of preserving both equal opportunity for everyone and preservation of our natural environment. I believe running huge deficits is like having a party on your credit card, and that it's so comfortable to be wealthy in the US that you should be willing to pay for it through taxes. I believe people should be able to make their own decisions about their lives and deaths, and that the law is based on secular principles of good order, rather than religious commandments. Finally, I'm not big on crowds or toys that make noise.
