prostrate
Are you a man over age 50? Do you have urinary problems-such as a weak urine stream and frequent urination, especially at night? Do you believe that these bothersome urinary symptoms are a natural part of aging and cannot be treated? Or may be your doctor says that you have an enlarged prostrate gland - known medically as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or benign prostatic hypertrophy. What should you do about it? The prostrate is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. The gland is made of two lobes, or regions, enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. The prostrate also surrounds the urethra, the canal through which urine passes out of the body. An enlarged prostrate means the gland has grown bigger. Prostrate enlargement happens to almost all men as they get older. As the gland grows, it can press on the urethra and cause urination and bladder problems. This narrowing of the urethra can cause some men with prostrate enlargement to have trouble with urination. Prostrate enlargement may be the most common health problem in men older than 60 years.
