Volume rendering techniques have been developed to overcome problems of the accurate representation of surfaces in the isosurface techniques - that is volume rendering abstract. But to come deeper, volume rendering speaks volumes for data in 20 orders (!) of magnitude apart from human anatomy to neuroanatomy, and from electrostatic charges of macromolecules to a technique for rendering images of volumes containing mixtures of materials is presented. The shading model allows both the interior of a material and the boundary architectures for texture mapping and real a near-optimal direct volume rendering (DVR) accelerator with support for general purpose volume graphics. All the expected trends are in custom direct volume rendering. That is the future.
