July 5, 2006, 9:03 a.m.MHO is that Apple is perfect for graphics and general surfing. I have never used one, so my experience is based on work. Tech support for a newspaper, where Apple surpasses in the graphics area. Mine is a limited kowledge of repair, which is fairly easy on an Apple.
Questions, can Apple run all the games Windows does? Does it have an office suite that can convert my MS Office files without trouble? Does it network with other computers seamlessly? Is there a major change over for external hardware, or can I use my legasy HW with it? I'm not arguing, just asking for info.
If so, Apple is a viable option for future purchases for my home.

July 5, 2006, 9:14 a.m.I've been curious to try a Mac myself they are so expensive though I hope they are worth the cash if I decide to switch. And I've tried Linux and I love the way it operates but what I don't like is that it's not exactly user friendly in the sense of just point and click when it comes to downloading content from the web or installing programs mainly because everything is made for windows and Mac. And I don't like using command lines I can do it but it seems like such an ancient way of doing things in this day and age.

July 5, 2006, 9:43 a.m.I have a niece who still uses the Win98 OS on her computer. I sent this story to her so she could get a heads up to upgrade her computer. I will say that for people who can not afford the upgrades, this is going to upset them. It might be nice if there were a cheaper way for them to upgrade, without having to spend a fortune doing it. I have been using WXP for a year now, and I have had no problems with it. I just hope it will remain supported for a while yet.

July 5, 2006, 11:04 a.m.To the question if someone is still using 98 or ME the answer is “Yesâ€. I live in a third world country. In Mexico many private schools and private user still use 98se and ME. It will most likely hit the most poor countries which can't effort to make the switch to XP, for sure not the rich ones. I'm a Linux user and tried since years convince people and private schools to switch but it is to difficult. Many businesses run on Windows and wherefore many people need to learn Windows of course. And also the Mexican government doesn't support the Linux movement. They must have MS Bonds or maybe got a nice suitcase full of something green in it. For sure Microsoft has given me more reasons to stay on Linux. Linux can run on very old machines doesn't matter which version you got. I got an Linux server running with an Celeron(Pentium III) with 750Mhz and it works great!

July 5, 2006, 11:23 a.m.I'm personally using Linux for the moment, but that doesn't change the general gist of this argument.
I hate Microsoft (and many other software companies for that matter), forcing me to change to a different platform just because the old one is not supported and is vulnerable to e.g. viruses, etc.
I had been using Windows 95, and Windows XP for some time -for the applications I am using, there was *nothing* in Windows XP that Win 95 couldn't do, in text processing, etc. .
The only reason for me to switch to Win XP was to stay compatible with being able to open other people's documents.
The only difference, for me as a user, between Win XP and Win 95 was that Win XP occupied 20 times the harddrive space, and naturally needed a much stronger computer. No advantages whatsoever.
So, my question would be not why someone is using Win 98, but why everyone had to switch to XP?

July 5, 2006, 11:52 a.m.I have had Windows XP on my computer purchased at Best Buy 2 years ago. I suddenly got a message last month saying that it was not a genuine copy. The tech which handled my problem initially said it was a valid Pricust Key Number that I had and they can't seem to help my on not being able to go to their web site and correct the key number so I con't have this annoying bubble come up constanly. I guess they don't support XP" all that well either.

July 5, 2006, 2:20 p.m.I had Windows ME for several years, and it was horrific, constantly faulting, hanging, etc. I've heard horror stories from several acquaintances and am convinced that ME was the worst operating system ever devised by man. When I converted to XP, I was unable to recover data stored in Microsoft ME Backup because it was made obsolete in XP. Nowhere in the boxed XP instructions or Microsoft product information web pages was this issue mentioned. I had to pay a data recovery specialist over $900 to recover the data, which Microsoft refused to reimburse me for. Therefore, I'm not surprised that Microsoft has discontinued support for 98 and ME. Since they control 90% of the software market, they can afford to do whatever they want. I'll be looking into Apple for my next computer.

July 5, 2006, 8:58 p.m.all new Apples can run Windows OR Apple software, MS Office runs SEAMLESSLY on Apples, it's engineered to network with computers, much easier than Windows computers.the 114,000 viruses for Windows XP versus the 3 viruses (that don't cause damage) for OS X. Thats for everyone out there, especially Psyjack.
