Constructive Criticism and How Netscape can... »

With the additions of a few more diverse categories to assist "eyeballs" in weeding out the developments would go along way. These few suggestions on categories, eyeball experience and community interactivity...I think will help crack the proverbial nut. (note "I think" and "help")

Rock on okitech, we're always interested in hearing back from you guys, and (as you addressed in your suggestions) while it may not always seem like it, we are always listening.

We've got planned, scheduled definite things for probably half of the things that you mentioned on here, so keep your eyes peeled and we'll make sure you know about them. So let's go down your list.

*sidenote* you really only need to check out calacanis.com to get all of the Jason you want.

-As everyone here knows, I want more tags. While it would be great to require people to input tags, right now, our audience is still pretty unfamiliar with social news/tagging. Once we're a little more established, we may look into it more, but right now we want someone who is completely tech-illiterate to jump on and be able to get the hang of things.

-I could be wrong, but I believe that's already fixed. If not, it will be shortly.

-More on that soon, channels might get a little shakeup.

    -Maps could be cool...

-You can always turn the Frame Navigator off. It's under the "Settings" tab in your profile. Check the box marked "Hide the Frame Navigator". As for putting it on the bottom as opposed to the side. I don't know how that'd be done, but I'll forward it on to our development team.

-To be honest, I'm not 100% sure what you're saying here, but I believe it's "keep it clean and simple". I agree.

-You may have noticed this week that we changed up how we do tabs in the channels. We're rededicating ourselves to keeping them fresh and so far I think it's going great.

-We only have a limited space to work with, so sometimes titling tabs becomes an issue. We try to keep it the same format week in and week out so that someone knows what they're looking at.

-You called me the cool dude in the glasses, you rock. Otherwise, I have to disagree with you some here. The comparison wasn't against CNN or MSNBC, I strictly meant compared to other social news sites. And frankly, while you may get the original story in the links, hopefully what we anchors add is something more than that. For further example, look up just about anything Dakota does. Sometimes it's tangential history about the Geico lizard, sometimes it's an interview with the subject in question, but it's always original.

-The video stuff literally started this week. It's going to grow into something amazing very soon.

-You'll see something soon, I promise.

To expand on my "tech-illiterate" comment above, that's not an insult to anyone. I want someone completely alien to what we're doing to be able to sign up, log into Netscape and understand what's going on. Having never heard of social news should not be any kind of handicap here. I always try to think to myself "How would my grandma react to this? Would she get it? Would she want to use it?" And that applies to any piece of new-fangled technology I get, she's kind of my watermark for usability, that's why she just got a brand new Apple. :D

great and well thought out...too bad only one rep so far gives it a second to reply. also I beleive okitech was making the inference on comparison that nothing particular brings me back here over the traditional bookmarks first. the difference between news site and "social news site" is very thin. Excite me, save me time along with the news!

                Hi all!

worker: {{get a way to conntact netscape.!!!!!!!!!!!!!}} I agree with that one! Linking friends is a good one or at least a way to send messages to multiple friends at one time.

I had a question about the point system which I may not have understood correctly. Are you suggesting giving everyone a "feedback" rating with the point system?

I do like being able to see the votes/comments on a story before I click on it.

Also, regarding the Engadget interview... it's a little difficult to get video of an interview when one person is in New York and the other in San Francisco. I think text was the best option.

woker: regarding story titles: There are only 3 occasions when we change titles:

                      1. When the title misrepresents the story as something other than it is AND we receive member complaints about it. (ie, adding OpEd / Satire / etc).

                      2. When the member who wrote the story asks us to fix something.

                      3. When a bug in the system deletes part of a title while we are adding pictures to posts. This does happen sometimes and should be fixed soon.

worker, make sure you report comments that you find that are abusive / contain "jew bashing" as you note above. You can report comments by clicking the Report button next to the comment. We remove abusive comments when we see them, but we don't always see them, and reporting them ensures that they will get our attention.

On that same note, please don't report comments just because you disagree with them. We receive lots of reported comments that don't warrant the report and that signal to noise ratio slows down our ability to remove actual abuse when it occurs.

From article: "The Community at large has asked many, many, many times for a forum directed specifically at at our community (contributors anchors, navigators, development team, etc) your total lack of response in the direction of supporting the community has really miffed a few folks. But you need to read through all the "send messages" and "story comments" to either find the remedy or the odd posting when you guys grace us with some knowledge."

People have sent me messages asking how do you do stuff or ask right on a story thread. Seems there should be FAQ or "How to get started" at least on how it works somewhere.

Glad to see a 'Block' on messages. I've gotten Spam. Why does anyone think that works? Maybe 1 in 50,000 is still better than 0.

Mamasan sent me this message in regard to a story she submitted and I voted on and commented on: "Thanks for your help. The story got tons of votes! Now this saturday morning the story is gone not only from from front page but if you check my stories submitted and look at front page stories, well it has disappeared with no record of it ever having existed anywhere! this is the second time this has happened since the cons started manipulating the system to get stories as number one.

What they do is get their small group to vote and then comment 24/7 to keep the story active.

They are changing the face of netscape with duplicity.

I am going to talk to netscape again about this( the other story that disappeared miraculously reappeared for a few hours then gone, they say they have no clue as to why this happens!)

Can I count you in to complain with me?

                              thanks mamasan"

This happened and I saw it on the front page last night, not an urban myth.

Hi, Virginia, I just replied to Mamasan, but I'll answer here as well. The story in question linked to a book publisher's promotional page for the book with the book for sale at the very top of the page, and as such, it qualified as spam and violated our Terms of Use. Once it was reported, I took action against the story for being spam and removed it from the system.

Regarding the group voting accusations, we are investigating this group and will take action if necessary, but we'd rather be sure of the abuse and exactly who is participating in it rather than take action against a member who just happened to get stuck in the comments of the wrong story at the same time, so please be patient as we investigate.

they discussed how to achieve this in their first stories posted.

                                        It is really wrong.

Thanks C.K. for the info. So if we have a page that has story about a book and it also just happens to be on sale at that site it is a no no. Got it. I'll check my submits for what is being sold there. Most every site has something for sale like lower mortgage rate offers on money stories about what to do about lowering your mortgage rates and stuff in real estate going to tank soon etc.... That is why the stories and commercials often go together and actually are tagged to those stories because they want the eyeballs there to get even 1 of the 50,000 who would look at it instead of the 0 otherwise. IMHO mamsan's story was not spam but obviously we differ.

And yeah it is all for sale!

I alos think they could have put a op ed piece of thier own to codify the story once it had already generated interest.

Also, your definition in Terms of Use of 'Spam' does not seem to cover what mamsan did with her submission. Is she trying to sell this book? Or is there enough of a background story here to talk about today's very important topic of 'Secret Government Prisons'. It was a lengthy article about a book that most of us will only see mentioned here. Do we need a 'Book Review' Channel or can we discuss the topic as 'Politics'?
