Oct. 17, 2006, 9:24 a.m.They lost the last line of Genesis long ago:
"Take not these writings literally, lest ye behave as an idiot and deny the truth of science."

Oct. 17, 2006, 9:55 a.m.That 'inferior animal method of procreation' is humankind's greatest joy. People who reject this world for the next deserve neither.

Oct. 17, 2006, 11:36 a.m.Greatest joy?
Come on, one of the reason's we are above the animals is because we are not driven solely by our instincts or urges to pro-create. I mean solely, we have those of course but we also have higher functions which lead to things such as art, music, literature.

Oct. 17, 2006, 12:58 p.m.We are animals, and disconnecting them from us only serves to disconnect us from the world we live in. We need to show more respect for the animals and plants we share this world with. This otherworldy attitude only makes it easier to justify destroying this world, which is the only world we will ever have, if your theory of religion is wrong. Someday we will be extinct animals, quite likely.

Oct. 17, 2006, 1:17 p.m.The article is a sample of a theory of Taoist alchemy, prana cultivation, kundalini, chi, ki, whatever you want to call it.
The goal is to take the sexual energy and consciously transfer it to higher brain centers or chakras to quicken enlightenment sought through various meditation practices, or some martial arts and yoga practice.
Take what you want, its just information.

Oct. 17, 2006, 1:42 p.m.I'm not a fan of the chakra concept, and don't believe in enlightenment, and think both Buddhism and Hinduism went wrong with this concept of enlighenment. I believe we (Brhaman) are the universe, that this is reality, not an illusion, and that the reason we incorporated into matter was to make the universe manifest, and therefore have no need of enlightenment. From my viewpoint, the animals, plants, and all life are on nearly the same level, so we do not try to escape our animal nature, but try to experience it as fully as we can...sensualism, perhaps, in other words.

Oct. 17, 2006, 1:41 p.m.We are more than animals. We have an individual concept of self. When a monkey looks in a mirror it sees another monkey.
Humans will never become extinct animals. We have a strong will to survive. Thus evolution.

Oct. 17, 2006, 2:31 p.m.Animals are a lot smarter and more self-aware than we had any idea they were 50 or 60 years ago. Sixty years ago almost all their actions and conduct were attributed to 'instinct'. I suppose that means that I should feel guilty about eating meat, but I don't.

Oct. 17, 2006, 2:53 p.m.A cow does not make decisions, its actions are driven by its instincts for things like food, safety and reproduction.
It can not break out of its own mental process and question its actions. It is a cow, all cow behavior is alike and predictable.
Perhaps man's fall from Eden is a analogy of his awakening of self consciousness coinciding with his separation from the animal kingdom.

samsara15
Oct. 17, 2006, 3:09 p.m.All animals have self-awareness. They whole concept of instinct has been supplanted. Animals can learn and use tools. Crows, for example, use tools. Octopuses can solve problems. Animals can even become neurotic. They have social structures. Smaller and/or less complex animals have smaller brains and less intellect to work with, so they exhibit less complicated behavior.
Religions and religious ideas are just theories. Until we die, they cannot be tested.

Oct. 17, 2006, 3:16 p.m.When did we stop being animals? Was our ancestor, homo eerectus, an animal? Was the ancestor of homo erectus an animal? A larger brain does not remove us from the animal kingdom.

Its suppose to be instructions on how to live your life.

Oct. 17, 2006, 8:48 p.m.Agreed. This life may be all there is, so it behooves us to live it well.
For me, how we treat the animals effects how we treat each
other. Treat the animals well, and we treat each other well.
In adition, I am an advocate of sensualism. Therefore it is doubtful I can find anything of meaning to me in a point of view that advocates ascetism.
