Nov. 24, 2006, 6:08 p.m.Although I did not have actual sleep apnea, I had a related condition called sleep Hypopnea as well as loud snoring. I opted for the surgery where my tonsils and uvula were removed. Since this is an actual amputation, the recovery is BRUTAL. I was 42 when I had the surgery and three years later I still snore, but as my husband describes it I'm now a "4" on the 1 to 10 scale, not a 14!
I was on Oxycontin for 2 weeks around the clock for the recovery period, I couldn't lay down, couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, couldn't drink. I also had ice packs on my neck 24/7 for the first week. I lived from pill to pill (luckily I did not become addicted). When I was able to eat after 2 weeks, I couldn't stand any salt or citrus of any kind for another week. At first when I drank more than one swallow, liquid came out of my nose (just for the first week). I can no longer sneeze quietly, and post-nasal drip has no idea where to go. Check all of the alternatives with your Dr.
