Posted by: mozzer 3 years agoThink the film Happyfeet was simply about cutesy dancing penguins? Think again. Here's an amateur film review worthy of the Netscape's political crowd.

Nov. 19, 2006, 9:24 p.m.btw, I saw the film. Great family entertainment, except for the environmental message that killed all the fun.
With that in mind I can only recommend that you see it on DVD.

Nov. 20, 2006, 12:09 a.m.Uh, what enviromental message. Can you elaborate? I thought the music and animation was excellent! Could you be perhaps reading waaaayyyy too much into a kid movie. and what adult reviews kid movies any way?

Nov. 20, 2006, 2:27 p.m.I agree with the reviewer. The movie was good until they started throwing in the "evil humans" message.
I thought it was going to be a movie about being diferent and standing out from the crowd. Did anyone else notice at the end that EVERYONE had to become like Happy Feet?
Was his name Mumbles or Mambo? I'm a bit hard of hearing and thought his name was Mambo.

What else do you expect from Hollywood?

Nov. 20, 2006, midnightWhat does this author think fairy tales and stories are for? To get a point across. Classic "fairy tales" or Mother Goose stories do the same thing. The whole concept of "Beauty and the Beast", "Cinderella", and "Snow White" were created to alieviate brides apprehension at being married off to a stranger. These types of stories are meant to get a point across-propoganda by story telling started LONG before Hollywood.

Nov. 20, 2006, 12:03 a.m.Lousy amerature review. Not worthy of comment. But since Happy Feet is a HUGE grossing movie, I'll add to that. Any messages are subtle and funny. The music is phenomenal, from the signing to the animated movements of the penguins. And the penguins are very, very funny. I took 4 kids ranging from 10 to 17 and they all LOVED it, even tho 2 have more conservative leanings than myself, the alleged "messages" they never found to be offensive. My advice, take your kids, enjoy the movie 99% is pure, excellent, very professional entertainment. A on the plot, the music, the animation, etc. It's nice that an adult can review a kid movie, but in my experience as a mom, most adults, like this one, completely bomb out on what kids like. If you don't like the movie, then just send your kids. It's rare to get a good G rated, very entertaining move. In fact I really like the message about the fact that humans CAN and DO care about animals.

Nov. 20, 2006, 11:44 a.m.Hey David, you got the movie wrong, so I bet you haven't seen it. The guy gets the girl in the end. Or weren't you paying attention. And the thing about "rejecting traditional religious values" is waaayy of base, these were elderly penguins just being a crabby bunch of old farts--nothing more. But if you're looking for "something more", go for it, but realize you're off by yourself. My apologies to you if you are an elderly OF, I can't help that and you're gonna get teased by the kids!
-

koranagirl
Nov. 20, 2006, 11:51 a.m.Actually, my kids loved the "old far penguins" who wouldn't change and didn't like the "new music" and they had to worship some "great penguin" in the sky who provided all the food. kind of like the "great pumpkin", so i guess that means the "great pumpkin" halloween story created by the most honorable charles shultz was also a liberal agenda by your standards, then, eh?

Nov. 20, 2006, 12:16 p.m.I think the political subtext you've listed here is present, but would go over the head of your average preschooler. This is an astute analysis, but I think you read a bit deeply.
- Kids like to laugh at elders when they use words or ideas they don't understand. They like to think of their elders as stuffy.
- The idea of not being able to change some things about yourself is a healthy one in most situations. There are some things you can change, like being illiterate for example, and some you can't, like being disabled. Kids that age are far too young to be able to tell the difference.
Fair disclosure, I haven't seen the movie. From other kids movie's I've seen there is a fair amount of moralizing, but the kids scarcely remember that - they remember the cute characters, catchy songs and funny jokes.

Nov. 20, 2006, 12:07 a.m.Sorry, but after seeing the movie, I think this guy reviewer maybe loves to hunt and kill squirrels in the backyard because they eat out of garbage cans, pigeons on city streets because they leave poop for him to step in, and he probably never cried in the movie theatre when Bambi's mom died, thinking that she made a good venison stew that night for some lucky old guy. This article I found shallow and very misleading. The thing about "wrong values" is a completely inappropriate analysis. How I interpreted this passage was just a bunch of grumpy old people that we all know that want the kids off their lawn, dogs shouldn't walk there, and the world is too noisy with too many fangled devices. I saw nothing more from this movie. My advise is to skip this review and leave movie reviews to the professionals and most times when a movie is high grossing, the public has loudly spoken.

Nov. 20, 2006, 11:37 a.m.This is supposed to be a movie for KIDS and KIDS should review it. You all think that kids are stupid, when they are not. Mine all read the papers and discuss politics each day, every day. I have now take SIX kids to see that movie, and they all loved it. I really don't think the views of any adult count in any of this. And moreover, you're judging a movie on matters that most people really don't care about. We want to be entertained. We want great song and dance. This movies fills that void and the kids love it.

Nov. 20, 2006, 10:01 a.m.I posted this review because I was amused by the author's overanalysis. I can see his point on a lot the issues brought up, but don't necessarily agree with all of it.
I personally had a problem with a plot twist midway in the film, and that derailed the fun for ME. I wouldn't mind a subtle message about animal conservation, but they shoehorned a subplot that changed the tone of the film. I felt the STORY and FUN suffered because of this plot twist.
ZG, the animation is top notch, the singing and dancing is great. YOU KIDS WILL LOVE IT!
Upon further reflection, go see happyfeet.

Nov. 20, 2006, 9:46 a.m.So we are to conclude that we should just burn all the fossil fuels we can find, deforest the rest of the planet and melt the polar caps as quickly as possible? Any message to the contrary is leftist propaganda? Fox news and Rush Limbaugh are the only reliable sources of information?
No thanks. I'll be sure to go see Happy Feet.

Nov. 20, 2006, 11:46 a.m.yeah, me neither. he reminded me of the kid in regulars english that got an A or two because he turned every paper in and then wanted to be in honors, but got mad because his repeated shallow analysis of literature only rated him a C or C- in an honors class.

Nov. 20, 2006, 10:39 a.m.Oh God, how dare they try to teach our children to protect the enviroment, accept people for who they are, don't let religion make you inhumane, and live amongst all of the people in this world. They should be shot, the bastards.

Nov. 20, 2006, 11:21 a.m.Not protect the enviroment but make humans look like evil and lie to the kids about the enviroment is in trouble, which science proves as far as global warming its not. So they teach to hate religion, hate man...good message for kids! Next they'll tell us all christians want to eat you..

Nov. 20, 2006, 2:24 p.m.The paranoid Xian psychopaths want to burn books, film, science and culture ... they want to burn civilization - like they did at Alexandria centuries ago - they want to take us back to the Dark Ages, their high point in human history.

Nov. 20, 2006, 11:41 a.m.Right on, Mamasan. The movie is happy and joyous and very well done. When I select a kid movie, I cannot even find a decent review in the paper because none are done by real kids. I hate it. Oftentimes I go to a "family movie" only to find out the action is too slow and boring for most kids and the colors are drab. The kids will watch it, but the experience is miserable for the parents because then they make endless trips to the bathrooms, talk during the movie, spill something, anything to be entertained. Kid movie reviews should be done by real kids and by how many bathroom/candy trips they make during the movie. If they never leave the theater, that's a 4 star kid movie. I had little trouble with the 6 kids during this movie. It had more than sufficient eye candy, jokes, and a feel good ending.

Nov. 20, 2006, 12:18 p.m.I animate and write comics for mature audiences but I also love animation for children. As far as "injecting" messages? I never had, never needed to since my audience is 16 and older. back in the day it was Charles Shultz with christian influence in "Peanuts". Nowadays we DO have liberal driven underotnes in SOME kids' entertainment...it's fine. I cant speak for this movie since I havent seen it but I will say Most if not all children gravitate towards a liberal ideal anyway. As far as homosexuality and religion is concerned I DO believe that it is up to the child and parental figures to discuss amongst themselves. When I was a kid there was no such thing as "social cartoons" I made up my own mind later on after I grew out of toys...y'know being a kid? we lost that. "If you are under thirty and are not a liberal you have no heart if you are over thirty and are a liberal you have no brain"- Winston Churchill

Nov. 20, 2006, 1:12 p.m.This dude is the reason why the extreme religious right, in Amerika, ought to be marginilized. This guy is clearly reaching, for what I don't know. I'm sure that if you looked hard enough, you'd find political undertones to any movie.
As far as the movie goes, I feel that its too long and the environmental pontificating boring. Its one of those movies you rent. That way you won't get caught up in the movie bull_hit of over priced food and crowds
