Posted by: mntnman444 3 years agoA poll conducted in June by the Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg found that 35% of registered voters would not consider voting for a Mormon for President.Only Islam would be a more damaging faith for a candidate, the poll found.

Nov. 27, 2006, 5:28 p.m.This kind of snowjob language is SO familiar here in SLC
"just a courtesy call" LOL!!

Nov. 28, 2006, 1:52 p.m.Hey,
When reading this comment thread, it's apparent that you contridict yourself a bunch of times. Not only that, but your hate speech is hardly tolerable.
You don't live in SLC, or you'd know that SLC is about 35-45% mormon. The mayor isn't mormon, and the county tends to vote democrat.
As for your coke comments below "Coke isn't allowed by the church till they bought a coke plant!" Not true. Some people believe caffeine is harmful and violates part of the church's word of wisdom against tobacco, coffee and tea. It's not a mandate that members not drink caffeine, but members are encouraged to be free of addictions.
As for the rest, I won't dignify it with a response. People, read for yourselves, realize that this guy is anti-mormon, and anti-tolerance. Tolerate all religions, work together, not apart.

Nov. 27, 2006, 5:15 p.m.I have lived in Salt Lake City for over 20 years and in my opinion the answer to this question is absolutely not!
The mormons in Utah are known all to well for injecting their religious beliefs into the laws that govern all.
Many non-Mormon Christians do not recognize Mormons as Christians here because of some of their more peculiar practices such as..I'll bet most people dont know that whatever their faith, the Mormons believe it is false, and after a person dies, the Mormons have their children go through death records and baptise dead people as Mormons ,giving their souls one last chance to choose the right religion or burn in hell.In one instance here in SLC,a dying woman asked the church not to baptise her after she died and the church refused sending it into a legal battle that ended up in a court decision to allow it.
Dont believe for one minute that the LDS churches beliefs on polygamy have been renounced...thats just in public. There are plenty of polygamists here.

Nov. 28, 2006, 4:30 p.m.Do you honestly believe that insertion of personal ideals into politics is not the norm of politics at all levels? Do you think that Nancy Pelosi, John McCain, Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and so on act solely in the best interest of the country and without regard for their personal opinions? Just how do they know what *is* in the country's best interest?

former Mormon of 30 years opinions on this site-

This info is very important for anyone considering Romney as a candidate.

Nov. 27, 2006, 5:57 p.m.If people will check out this site, you can see some very weird and scary examples of mainstream LDS practices.
A Mormon group that claims it can "cure" gayness by hooking people up to electrodes and forcing them to watch gay porn films to get shocked if they get aroused...anyone ever seen Clockwork Orange?Do you get a mental image of Abu Graib?Their theories about masturbation are strange too but then half of you probably have already "dulled your thinking".

Nov. 27, 2006, 6:01 p.m.While I dont believe that mormons are close to Islam,I did meet many people from Poland and other Eastern Bloc countries who told me that Mormonism was the closest thing to Communism that they had seen in this country.
-

pogo58
Nov. 28, 2006, 4:33 p.m.Well, there you go. An anonymous poster on a message board has spoken with other anonymous people who claim to be Eastern Europeans and claims that they feel that Mormonism is close to Communism. Must be a fact, coming from such impeccable and proven sources. I've spoken with some Eastern Europeans who feel that Dubya Bush is the best leader in the world. Must be true.

Nov. 27, 2006, 6:50 p.m.The FLDS Church that is run by Warren Jeffs is the real Mormon church.Romney's LDS Church is the same except, to become a state they renounced polygamy. The FLDS then split off because they believed their core values had been sold out. There are many LDS polygamists here,I've even seen one of those fluffy little interest stories on local news with a cop and his 3 wives sharing recipes. The story wasn't about having 3 wives,it was about chocolate chip cookies.

Nov. 27, 2006, 8:53 p.m.thanks blue
Another example of mormon thinking-
In the early 80's,when cable TV was emerging, the 90% mormon state legislature passed a law outlawing cable TV,yes,it was illegal to have cable in UT,punishable by fine and imprisonment. The reason was that ,if legal, people would be able to subscribe to the Playboy Channel. They were taken to court the next year and it was explained to them...you know, that little remote thingy.
Every year the legislature is good for at least one laugh, such as the anti-subliminal message bill. I watched a legislator hold up a whiskey bottle and claim that it was "shaped like a womans behind",therefore it would cause more people to buy alcohol, which leads to "Ted Bundy"like behavior"
-

pogo58
Nov. 28, 2006, 4:41 p.m.Wow! I wish I had known this when I had my cable TV while living in Utah in the early 80's. Little did I know that I was a criminal. And the technician who hooked up our cable from the company that provided our service failed to inform us of the risk. Nor did he hide the fact that he was apparently running around and illegally hooking up cable for thousands of people. That rascal! Probably working for the government and trying to get us all fined and imprisoned!
Do you have any actual facts to offer, or do you rely solely on hearsay for your arguments? It frightens me that people with such disregard for facts are voting at all.

The mormons here are foaming at the mouth already at just the mention of Romney running.Although I dont believe that you should not vote for someone just because they are a particular religion,it's not a reason to vote for someone either.
I absolutely have to inform people on this and if he ever wins I'll be heading up your way real fast! LOL!

It's a strange community here in SLC,about 60% mormon and definitely divided, the rest of the state is 70-100%.

mntnman444
Nov. 27, 2006, 9:29 p.m.The thing is,I believe that they can practice their religion any way they want, including polygamy.but to try to convince the whole country that their beliefs are mainstream and that they would keep them seperate from govt is a complete sham.I'm trying to point out first hand accounts of the opposite.

Nov. 28, 2006, 1:08 a.m.I don't care what 'faith' a candidate subscribes to. Never did. I care about their past history...who they are, and I care that they recognize that no matter what their belief is, the Constitution is their first priority.
-

jordan11
Nov. 28, 2006, 11:42 a.m.And again, as long as a candidate can differentiate between how he/she conducts his/her life....and the right of others to live theirs as they see fit, I do not care what their religion is. george bush is a prime example of someone who can't do that, and I didn't vote for him.
-

JPerkins
Nov. 28, 2006, 7:05 a.m.Makes one wonder how bush became president than. Though alot of people feel he knew that he could not have won without cheating by hacking the vote. We need to go back to the paper ballot before we get another moron in office. Before anyone say's anything I know that there is a differance between a moron and a mormon. I wonder if bush does though.

Nov. 28, 2006, 8:55 a.m.The Morman Church? Not Christian and dangerous. Read the history of the Morman Church by Roger Thompson. They believe in divorce and plural marriage. They have many secrets that you only get to know if you are a certain level. I'm married to one and so is my Christian Sister-in-law. She's a doctor and I am a computer tech. WE are educated and informed. Our children have suffered persecution from there own family along with us. The other grandchildren belong to the church, my children and my sister-laws children are Christian. Please understand they hold there selves on the same level as God. They believe they will be Gods themselves, and God was a man. They believe in Aliens, and that God lives on a planet named Klob. Please don't be sucked in by the family values they try to represent. They find people who are looking for something. Not til 6 yrs. later when I achieved the level did I get to know you're only told what you are ready for. Please dig deep before it's to late. I Pray!

Nov. 28, 2006, 9:44 a.m.The same questiones, about his catholic faith, were probably raised about JFK, when he ran for president.
The fact of the matter is this: Mr. Romney is still an anglo-saxon MAN. He'll have a better chance of winning then Barack Obama. They don't call it the WHITE house for nothing

Nov. 28, 2006, 10:20 a.m.Per the survey only a Muslim would be a less acceptable faith than a Mormon? I guess if Tom Cruise has any presidential aspirations, this should be good news for the L. Ron Hubbard crowd. :)

Nov. 28, 2006, 11:28 a.m.I do want people to know that the average mormon churchgoer, while maybe carrying some predjudice and different beliefs, are really good, decent people who have been brainwashed since birth.
In Utah there are 3 catagories
A mormon-the ones I just spoke about
A GOOD mormon-someone who looks down their nose at other mormons and considers themself to be better
And "Jack mormons"-the ones who do everything they're not supposed to,maybe dont go to church but claim they are mormons.
The danger is that all these group[s will blindly and unanimously vote for who the church wants.
-

mntnman444
Nov. 28, 2006, 11:42 a.m.I have my issues with mormons but that doesnt mean I'm trying to convince others to hate the mormons. My goal here is to point out first hand accounts to show people that the leaders of the church are too immature and closed minded to hold any political power. The church has its place but it's definitely not in govt.

Nov. 28, 2006, 11:48 a.m.'Can A Mormon Be President'?
No....
'Republican presidential campaign of Massachusetts Governor
(Willard) Mitt Romney, 59, whose family has long been part
of the church's élite.
Too much Baggage, their way of live is immoral and illegal...
Coming from Mass is no bargain, Ted 'Chaipaquatic' Kennedy, Gay Marriage, is a disgrace in itself.....
This will never Happen !!!

mntnman444
Nov. 28, 2006, 11:55 a.m.mormons believe that black people are the "race of Cane" and their skin color is a curse. They will gladly accept blacks (and their 10% tithing)into the church but it wasnt until recently, when a black man was denied any position in the church because of his race and took legal action for discrimination, that the leader of the church had a "revalation" from God that they can now hold office. The revalation thing is common and,of course, had nothing to do with the lawsuit. Hmmm

Nov. 28, 2006, 12:03 p.m.For years, mormons were not allowed to drink Coca-Cola.Recently ,when the church bought the Coca-Cola bottling plant in SLC,the leader of the church had another "revalation" from God that it is now OK for mormons to drink Coke.Hmmm

In Utah,do you know how many times I've heard this will never happen? I tried warning my friends in Mass before Romney was elected and now the state cant stand him and he's already making fun of his own state in the south to try to get votes.

Nov. 28, 2006, noonYou are going to see Romney strongly denying that his church is the same as Warren Jeffs but ask any non mormon in Utah and they will laugh at that.

Nov. 28, 2006, 12:03 p.m.It is obvious that certain posters claim to understand Mormons, but are not. They also claim brainwashing and intolerance while stereotyping and labeling. Maybe you need to talk to a Mormon and get some real truth. Unfortunately, religious beliefs are taken very seriously, even more that politic in certain cases. As was mentioned
But church officials are wary of the impact Romney's candidacy could have on them--and on the portrayal of their faith. Yes, his campaign will bring attention and credibility to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), as the Mormons are formally known, and give them a chance to demystify their theology and customs. But church officials also calculate that Romney's bid to succeed George W. Bush could remind some mainstream Christians just how different Mormonism is from their faith and perhaps expose their flock to more of the sort of discrimination that drove their founders west by handcart and covered wagon into the Great Salt Lake Valley.
