We've fixed a lot of bugs, ordered member activity in chronological order on the profile page, and added more options for the Friends' page, including as list of your friends' recent submissions (as in the last generation of the profile pages) and a Recent Friends' Activity page, which is a web-based version of our recently released Firefox extension. We've also added a new stats page and upped the font size of any Notes you want to add to the stories on your Activity pages. Also, there is now a note at the bottom of each story indicating what type of interaction you had with the story.

Wow, this is great stuff.
The stats page is incredible. A future addition for the API that would be nice is Netscape stats badges that we can put on our blogs/websites/myspace pages (eg. http://www.diggsig.com/ )
I'm also loving the friends recent activity page as a non-firefox alternative to the extension as well as the "Made it to Homepage!" notices on stories.

Now THAT'S more like it! Avatars I can see again, a cool stats page, friends activity & submitted stories (is there a way to tell which friends are online?)

  Your friends that are online are listed first and have a bold orange border around their box on your friends page.

    I've been playing around on the friends activity page and it's not keeping pace with the Firefox stalker, er..activity bar. It's not showing any activity even while I'm getting notices on the FF sidebar.

      Once you view the activity in the Firefox sidebar, it won't show up on that page. If you view the activity on that page, those stories won't show in the sidebar. In other words, once you view some activity in either place, you shouldn't see it again.
      It's something we're working on tweaking so that you can reload the page and still see recent activity, but for now, that is how it works.

    That means that, as a commenter, your comments have the 60th best rating (either average or total) of all commenters on the site. Congratulations! Apparently, people like what you have to say.

  It refers to either the average rating of all your comments or the total score (Goods Bads) of all your comments (I can't recall off the top of my head).

      One of the other developers could probably give a more exact answer, but the total site ranking is a combination of your commenting, voting, and story submission ranks. I'm not sure of the exact formula, but you could look at it as a "popularity/top users" ranking.

Add friend should show if you are logged in and they are not already your friend.
Send message should show when you are logged in.

There are two options for this:
1. You can find all of the anchors, navigators, and developers on the About page: http://www.netscape.com/about/ (linked at the bottom of every Netscape page). Any staff member that is currently online will have a "Send Message" link next to their avatar.
2. On the home page, in the bottom of the right column, there is an "On Shift" section that lists all of the Anchors and Navigators that are online at Netscape in an official capacity, as opposed to just casually browsing around.

We thought having just the on shift anchors and navs on the homepage was more effective. You can always add anchors and navigators as friends. :)
What did you use the anchor links for?
Also, What other odds and ends do you think are hanging loose?

  The send message button bug has been fixed. It will show up on the live site next time we push out code.
  The 40 friends are just for display. When others view your public page they will see an "add" link. I guess I dont have a good explanation for why they are there, other than to let members see who your friends are.
  The post note feature is new. You can add notes to any story on your participation/activity pages. When other member go to your profile (participation/activity) pages they will see your notes. For example, If you vote for a story you can add a note saying why. It is a way to mini-blog about items in your participation.
  A side note: I will be adding a "remove note" feature soon. Right now you cant really delete or blank out a note.

I will agree again. Perhaps set a maximum limit to the tiered reply system. Most of the comments that are replies, to replies, to replies, etc... are often 2 or sometimes 3 users having a conversation. The drift to the right on certain comment threads makes it difficult to read (i.e. we have to scroll down comments that are really scrunched far to the right and take up a lot of vertical space) and they can be difficult to understand in terms of the structure (especially when people reply to older comments in a long comment thread).

The stats page is more of a power user page, I would expect all of you to want that one over any other. We are worried that the members not commenting in this thread may prefer a more uniform and simplistic overview.
It's good to hear your opinions though, because that's what influences our decision making process.

  With all this talk of stats, and "power users" it's real easy to lose sight of why people come here.
  I fear that more people will now become fixated soley on rankings and start trying "game the system" a la Digg.

    Power user doesn't mean more powerful than everyone else. It just means someone who is fully engaged with the site. You all who submit stories, comment on stories, and vote on stories are power users. There are a lot of members who simply vote and that's it.

      I am familiar with the term "power user", CK. Perhaps I was unclear...
      I forsee that within the next couple of months, the users that visit netscape out of pure enjoyment will be eclipsed by those that are in it to be "#1" at something.
      Here are two scenarios to help illustrate my point:
      An existing user may feel inadequate being ranked #1,943 in whatever category, and will participate solely to boost their numbers. Thus, the enjoyment is gone.
      Stoners will lose his #1 voting rank to some lonely geek with a homebrewed voting macro. The geek will have thousands of "friends" and will vote on every single story.
      It is inevitable. The gamers will come. The stats will serve to validate their lonely existence on this planet.

        Mozz---I wish you wouldn't let the stats get to you. The only stats we should see are the positive and negative votes we receive. We didn't care about stats before, lets not care now either. We use the site cause we like to read, argue and check up one each other. God knows---I love to read your posts:)

        Mozz, I hear you. I think the key to avoid this is to make sure that we avoid becoming all about the homepage. Ideally, we'd like the channels--and all of the of the tags for that matter--to grow into thriving communities within the larger community.

      I think the stats are great. They will increase user activity on the site. Now we have many people that comment regularly, but do not vote on stories. I think this will encourage more users to vote on stories if they have some type of attainable goal in mind.

It should display a box right below the post that allows you to send a message without leaving the permalink page. Have you tried the standard clearing of the cache?

We may consider adding a mutual friends only preference, although I'd prefer to leave it the way it is, which is much more like how Flickr handles friends. It's friendlier.

  I have just been using the friends page now that it has the icon that show if a user is a mutual friend to determine. Their might be a better way though.
