Jan. 11, 2007, 11:42 p.m.Does that explain John Kerry's comments: You have to be stupid to be in the Army.
Wasn't he in the Army? Or was he Navy?

Dec. 17, 2006, 10:03 p.m.desperation has nothing to do with it drugs impact the lives of so many allowing them to join a storied institution such as the military may give them what they need to quit, besides I imagine it isn't easy to do drugs while in the service, and if its weed who really cares. anderson cooper and the media have become what they set out to stop, manipulating people with biased info, thank you and good night indeed.

Dec. 18, 2006, 8:56 a.m.Indeed. Maybe if more gays join the military, it'll straighten them out, too.
Seriously, though, I think you'd have to be consciously ignoring the facts to think that the media are the bad guys in uncovering this and that the government can do no wrong.

Dec. 18, 2006, 9:18 a.m.....the military may give them what they need to quit, besides I imagine it isn't easy to do drugs while in the service, and if its weed who really cares....
The military is a stress factory that may well drive them to use stronger drugs..lots of heroin addicts came OUT of the military & they were not junkies going in. Seen the reports of bumper opium harvests in Afghanistan this year? Seen that report about that forest of pot they found there? My friend got busted smoking hash at a Kiss concert in Germany years ago- he was in the service--drugs were everywhere. He joined to get away from the element HERE. A german MP had a machine gun pointed at the base of his skull so I guess some people care. My nephew went to join , tested positive for weed , speed & cocaine--they had him exercise & drink lots of tea with lemon to flush him out. He says there's great hash in Iraq , wonder what else he's going to find...hmm.

Dec. 18, 2006, 12:38 p.m.I have never tried drugs and have never been drunk. I know people consider me a freak for this.....but honestly, did I really miss anything? I didnt puke, kill anyone by driving drunk, or act stupid. I have vivid memories of highschool and college because I was sober! It scares me to death that our soldiers could possibly be under the influence while defending our country. I have never seen an employer allow its employees to be high or drunk. Why on earth would our government allow this? Duh! People need to raise the bar and try doing life straight and not high or drunk.

Dec. 18, 2006, 12:25 a.m."We will test you here today, if it comes up positive we get you to wait a while and then we will test you again.
Then when it comes up clean , your good to go!"
Whats next, will they give out drugs to entice the youth to join?
My question is, do you think they are coming up a little short
on new recrutes?

Dec. 18, 2006, 6:32 a.m.Pot smokers are some of the most hardened criminals out there, totally unreformable and absolutely a menace to society. This has to be the biggest blights we have in society today. Obviously, I am kidding. If it is ok for the armed services to allow a cushion, then why do people have to pass drug tests to hold a job, especially when pot is the only drug that stays in your system for weeks longer than any other drug out there, except for pcp, of course, and I have never even seen the stuff. These drug tests are made to target the pot user and that is not fair. While I do not neccessarily disagree that it impairs a person to a certain extent, and smoking it right before work may not always be the best of ideas, depending on your occupation, they really need to find a test that detects usage, say, within two or three hours of a workshift, not the fact that you toked a bean three weeks ago and lost a good job because of it. Kind of off topic, but along the same lines......

Dec. 18, 2006, 12:40 p.m.Honestly, I think it is safer than alcohol, which has wayyyyy more addictive qualities to it- to certain people, of course..... you are right on that one. Some of my favorite people are non stop tokers.....

Dec. 18, 2006, 6:35 a.m.....of course, I also believe that if our world leaders acted like the indians did, and maybe sat around a round table, or even in a teepee and smoked the peace pipe while discussing world issues, the world would be a better place than it is now.... hit and pass already.....

Dec. 18, 2006, 9:50 a.m.WTF does it matter? as soon as these soldiers are in Iraq for a few months and they experience the FUBAR situation that is the reality of Iraq, they'll be doing whatever they can get their hands on to stay super alert, lose themselves in whatever little "high" they can find to forget what they might have seen that day and then try to kill the pain, whether mental or physical. most of the soldiers there are probably doing some kind of drug (legal or illegal) to get them through another day. ahhh, the joys of war (sic)...
-

kerrywon
Dec. 18, 2006, 11:54 a.m.it must be blissful, your ignorance of the situation in Iraq that is. I take it you have no practical experience of what goes down in war. its nothing like the video games you probably play shooting up "******s" and whatnot, sir. incest? hardly. some might call it "being informed".

Dec. 18, 2006, 11:47 a.m.I got out of the service just before they started giving drug tests. The first year, they threw out 60,000 people on false positives.Drug tests are less accurate than polygraphs which are not even allowed in court and it is illegal to give someone a polygraph as a requirement for employment.Drug tests do not give employers the info they need,is someone intoxicated on the job.Drug tests are the equivelent of giving someone looking for a janitors job, a welding test.
Anyone should know that a recruiter will tell you anything to get you to sign on the dotted line.
-

IncaQueen
Jan. 11, 2007, 11:47 p.m.They fire people all the time on jobs after taking polygraph tests. Someone didn't tell the employers?

Dec. 18, 2006, 12:21 p.m.This is old news to me..I got a better story for you all..
Years ago i worked in a health food store in an urban area. There was a huge army recruitment station there. I knew they were targeting minorities because the other 3 towns i worked in didnt have an army recruitment center. these guys were out on the street in force everyday trying to convert people..years later targeting of minorities by the recruiters got headlines by the way.
These recruiters would come in and show these "recruits" what drug test cleaner they needed to buy and in some cases took the money out of their wallets to buy these kits for them. they would come in with 3 to 5 people every other day or so and would sometimes even buy them kits. After talking to one of these recruiters he told me.. AND HERE IS THE PUNCHLINE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN..
They got a commision for every new recruit they got in..
Rome is burning.. It's time for change.
-

mntnman444
Dec. 18, 2006, 12:24 p.m.The real pressure on recruiters is that they have to get a certain number of people in each month, when I was in,it was 8.If they fail to meet their quota, they lose their job as a recruiter.

Dec. 18, 2006, 12:42 p.m.I am from a military family (father retired after 21 years also, four brothers all went in and my husband) and the drug problem has been there for many many years. This is not a new thing when there are conflicts the standard drops and when we are at a more peaceful state the standards go up. It's the same with gay soldiers when they were in Vietnam no one cared but once the war was over they were kicked out. This is unfortunately how our government sometimes works. When they need you they will bend over backwards to get you and when your no longer needed your out.

Dec. 18, 2006, 12:47 p.m.The British were the first ones to study drug use in the military in the 1800's in India.Worried about soldiers use of hasheesh,The study concluded that there were no adverse effects on soldiers.

Dec. 18, 2006, 1:27 p.m.It's amazing that there are people that condone these recruiter's actions. People seem to want to overlook anything that is being done wrong by this government or administration to alleviate any bad publicity. Whatever comes to light is quickly excused and swept under the rug. If the government was proved to have direct links to the mafia, only 71% of us would protest. The other 29% would make excuses for it and blame librals for aiding the terrorists for making it known to the public. That 29% are the Bush followers.
-

Dec. 18, 2006, 1:40 p.m.The recruiters are committing crimes that can land them in prison. Fact is many of you think it is okay for them to ignore Army regulations. What other regulations would you pick and choose for them to violate.
-

RedstateLib
Dec. 18, 2006, 1:49 p.m.The first thing their recruits are learning is that the rules are not important and can be gotten around. Not exacty setting the groundwork for good order and disipline that are vital to a successful military. Yep sounds like a great ideal to me. NOT.
