Dec. 27, 2006, 12:46 a.m.I always thought he got a bad rap. Policies he tried to do were good.
Nixon was gone. Basically convicted. Closure for the country.
A bad rap since most controversy seemed to be over his apparent clumsyness.

Dec. 27, 2006, 12:50 a.m.I'm a lil' too young to remember Ford. I only remember Nixon because we watched the impeachment on TV at school when I was in 3rd grade.

Dec. 27, 2006, 12:56 a.m.nah, gotta say I disagree. and I think you would too if you think about it. people need to not just be convited, which he was spared, but actually *pay for their crimes,* and that goes double for the head of the country, if you're going to perpetuate the story that we're all equal before the law.
Ford pardoned Nixon. He shouldn't have. And what got swept under the rug was the Nixon's tacit admission that that was part of the deal that gave Ford the presidency. So Ford in my mind is deserving of no sympathy whatever; he's a criminal and if there's a hell, he joins Reagan there.

Dec. 27, 2006, 1:02 a.m.What do you mean closure? He pardoned Nixon. There should've been a criminal investigation and a trial. What could've been uncovered would have done the country well and we may have avoided a number of criminal administrations (among both corrupt monopoly parties) that followed.
Nixon was really fearful that the dots would be connected and the Repugnant shadow gov't exposed. Ford made sure that wouldn't happen - just like he made sure the JFK assassination hearings went nowhere. Nixon's CIA Director, George H.W. Bush would've been exposed as the criminal that he is. History would've been very different, indeed.

Dec. 27, 2006, 3:56 p.m.I agree. It's a testament to President Ford's success that his critics have so little material to work with. Whether or not you agree with the Nixon pardon, President Ford served his country with competence, civility and spiritual grace during difficult times. When "weighed in the balance" he comes out quite well.

Dec. 27, 2006, 1:01 a.m.Sad news but at least he did live a long life and left with a lot of people and politicians from both parties showing lots of respect for him. Not much more you can ask for.

Dec. 27, 2006, 2:05 a.m.During World War II, as a member of Congress, on the Warren Commission, and as President, Gerald Ford served where his country needed . We were fortunate to have had such a man.

Dec. 27, 2006, 2:07 a.m.It's very sad to hear about Preident Ford. No one has the right to judge him or anyone who has passed away. There is a Higher Power who will do that. There are always negative people out there who have nothing good to say (jehovahjones). You were not there, you were not put in his position, you were not in Office and on the line. I'd be a little more critical of Bush now, while he is alive, sending our troops to chase after a ghost they will never find. Look into what he's reallt doing behind the American peoples back, like selling all our ports to over seas companys and selling all our major highway construction to our enemys. Ford did the best he could in a very crooked world, he DID NOT CREATE. That was done centurys before he came along. So to you Gerald Ford, good bye and thank you for leading our country in a time of such turmoil.

Dec. 27, 2006, 2:27 a.m.yep, Bush is scum. And Ford is too. If Ford hadn't made a rcooked deal to pardon Nixon, we might have actually averted the disastrous course that the GOP has pursued since, which has culminated in Bush.
Goodbye, stumblebum Ford, and if there's a God, may he or she speed you to your final reward. it's been coming a long time.

Dec. 27, 2006, 2:59 a.m.I doubt that he will be missed by more than his family and he was the least offensive and most malleable choice that Nixon could have made to ensure that he would be pardoned. He did nothing of consequence during his tenure other than that and will be relegated to nothing more than a footnote in the history of this Nation before too long!
-

jehovahjones
Dec. 27, 2006, 3:46 a.m.yep. and the footnote will say he was the only unelected president, until 2000.
he also has admitted, and has Nixon, that "resigning and being pardoned was one of the scenarios we discussed" when he was talking to Ford about whether he would nominate him as VP to replace Agnew. An admission if I have ever heard one.
-

B1BLancer
Dec. 27, 2006, 7:13 p.m.To say that he did nothing of consequence is absolutely wrong. He helped put back together a fractured country. Pardoning Nixon was, without question, the right thing to do to bring an end to, as President Ford put it, our "national nightmare." Even Carl Bernstein recognizes that now, even though he was appalled by the pardon at the time. Ford basically sacrificed himself for the greater good of the country. He also helped bring an end to the recession he inherited from Nixon which was the worst recession since WW2. He also pushed reforms of the airline, rail, and trucking industries through Congress.
The liberal mainstream media loved to portray Ford as a bumbling, clumsy fool, but the reality is that he was anything but.

Dec. 27, 2006, 3 a.m.Great president or not, NOBODY deserves to be disrespected the way that some(jehovah)are doing. I am not arguing wether he was a great leader. All im saying is that, at least for his families sake, everyone needs to show a litle respect.
-

jehovahjones
Dec. 27, 2006, 3:49 a.m.and I gave you my reply to that, to which you had no answer. I wonder why? (actually I don't wonder. it was hard to argue with.)
frankly, your suggestion that anything we are saying in here in any way impacts his family is ludicrous, and I defy you to show me they care a whit.

Dec. 27, 2006, 3:50 a.m.all those points have been made, except the one about carter.
I agree to a point, but if Nixon had chosen Reagan, Rockefeller or Connelly, the other three choices, any Democrat running against them would have won anyway. I wish it had been Reagan, because he'd have been out of our hair in much less time.

Dec. 27, 2006, 3 a.m.I have to say I don't think too highly of Ford, I'm afraid that remains consistent with a number of Republicans.
But one thing that also remains consistent is my sympathy and sadness whenever anyone passes away, my condolences to his family and friends =(

Dec. 27, 2006, 3:19 a.m.I'm sorry to hear of the passing of President Ford. While I'm sure my comments will draw the ire of many, I believe - that is, it is my opinion - that he was put in a no-win situation when he bacame president. While President Ford was never elected to the office of President or Vice President he acted in what, I'm sure, he considered the best interests of the nation. I would not wish to be put in his situation in 1974. I can scarcely imagine the difficulty that he had in holding that office at that time in our nation's history. Whether fairly or unfairly he will be forever linked to President Nixon and the whole Watergate mess.
-

jehovahjones
Dec. 27, 2006, 3:59 a.m.fairly, I would say. he was the one who cheated the people out of their right to punish the crimes of watergate, and it's right that that be his legacy.

Dec. 27, 2006, 3:27 a.m.When Prez. Ford took office he faced turmol in this land that only a few had to deal with. He made some good choices and he made some bad choices. But at least he tried to heal the many rifts that were shaking the country apart. BTW gar86 serving on a aircraft carriar in WWII IS giving much of themself. My heart goes out to the family,GOD BLESS
-

jehovahjones
Dec. 27, 2006, 4:01 a.m.you don't heal by letting major criminals go. if our laws are to mean anything, they have to apply to the highest in the land. if they are allowed to be immune, the whole system is shown to be a lie. I think his action started a slide we have not yet recovered from, and we may never. If Bush had not seen that there was really no punishment for presidents, would he be as blatant about his crimes as he is?
