Jan. 22, 2007, 12:41 p.m.If that is what will get more people to adopt the new Blu-Ray technology, then we're more screwed up as a society than people are aware of...

Jan. 22, 2007, 1:10 p.m.Actually, it's happened before. The porn industry is credited by many to have played a major role in the domination of VHS over Betamax, even though Betamax was technologically (both in video and audio) superior.
A report on NPR found that Sony refused to license the Betamax technology to porn studios. The porn industry flocked to the VHS standard. Now, most people believe that the porn industry would be a minor player in the world of video entertainment. But the report found that the porn industry actually grosses more ($13 billion) than all the major Hollywood Studios combined. I have friends who work for Fox, Universal Studios, and Disney who can verify this figure and conclusion is accurate. It was a gross miscalculation that cost Sony the video format war years ago. It seems again that the porn industry is lining up against Sony (Blu Ray this time).

Jan. 22, 2007, 4:43 p.m.neo:I am a little worried about you neo. This is not your typical article. I see the humor of it, but I still think it's too far beneath you. But, again, it is funny. I know this story was posted because of the technologies used, right?

Jan. 22, 2007, 5:26 p.m.Personally I enjoy stories about early adopters (in this case the pornography industry) of technologies tackling challenges that other later adopters will be facing soon. They're taking the risks and learning to solve problems that all film-makers will deal with as they enter the HD age. It is fortunate for everyone that their product is profitable enough that they can afford to take those risks.

Jan. 24, 2007, 12:38 p.m.I think some have missed the point. Big money induces big discoveries for other causes. In this case, porn is big business, and in its ventures to produce better quality for its products, it leads us to better uses for their discoveries. Did I say that right? Oh well, I've learned a few new things from researching the topic. Woohoo!
