Some 300 militants were killed in the Najaf fighting, along with five Iraqi security forces, a provincial spokesman said Monday, citing reports from officers at the site. The figure could not be independently confirmed.

Ahmed Deaibil, a spokesman for Najaf province, said the fighting had stopped but U.S. and Iraqi forces still had the area surrounded and had seized heavy machine guns, ammunition and other weapons.

Thinking about this war and the next war in another unfriendly Arab nation, can we extend control over the next population or only remove the offending state. Is extended war with extended occupation possible. Even with establishing a firm dictatorial political apparatus dominated by coercive secret police methods. The Soviets in Pakistan could not hold onto control. I know we can gain victory in local battle at deep cost to the enemy and the property of the city under attack. Is war possible if extended political occupation is needed, or can we only gain a quick military victory that removes the present government and then do we need to immediately remove ourselves from continuing attacks. The next war may again be one more light war but without occupation. This is a question of any extended war over large national boundaries where the local population would continually attack remaining enemy forces. Should we be into military and political hit and run tactics for the next war.
