Exercising Congress's Constitutional Power to End a War »
Posted by: Spadecaller 2 years, 9 months agoAt the Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing today, Senator Russ Feingold's opening statements admonished the Congress: "In the United States of America, the people are sovereign, not the President. It is Congress' responsibility to challenge an administration that persists in a war that is misguided and that the country opposes."

Jan. 31, 2007, 8:25 p.m.Go for it, Senator! Someone needs to reign in the administration. It is unfortunate that the Republican-controlled Congress in 2003 didn't have enough backbone to reserve some control over the 'tactics' chosen by the President in his self-declared war. By giving him such a blank check, they - both Republican and Democrat - abrogated their Constitutional responsibilities.

Jan. 31, 2007, 8:40 p.m.Well said Watchemoket! I must applaud the young senator for his convictions and for taking the initiative. He's done it before, even when no one stood behind him.
Feingold was direct about his views today and didn't play the game of politics. We criticize politicians for talking, for all their posturing, and rightly so, but when one of them stands out and puts his cards on the table, we should let that be heard also. BRAVO!

Jan. 31, 2007, 8:44 p.m.Wahoo Feingold! It is past time when someone with courage stood up and talked about the responsibility of Congress. I wish he were running in my state for Senator, I'd try to figure out how to vote for him twice.
The administration has had free reign for way too long. They have spent money like water on this debacle and then in his State of the Union speech he talked about being financially responsible. Oh, do give me a break.
Go Fiengold! BRAVO TWICE.

Jan. 31, 2007, 9:17 p.m.IN March of 2006 Feingold called on Republicans and Democrats to admonish the President, if any of you recall.
"We, as a Congress, have to stand up to a president who acts like the Bill of Rights and the Constitution were repealed on Sept 11, [2001]," Feingold said.

Jan. 31, 2007, 9:58 p.m.I stated it yesterday and I repeat it again. Senator Feingold is the first representative that has orated a clear stance against an unjust and unprovoked war by America. If only other representatives, both Republicans and Democrats could join forces to challenge King George and his Totalitarian regime.

Jan. 31, 2007, 10:24 p.m.Time for the people to have the IRS audit the President, his Administration members and former administration members too. Where did the money from the blank check go? Our men were fighting with out proper armor after that blank check was issued. He went into this war knowing that America was not financially stable for a war. Feingold is right and Congress should have stood up to him along time ago. Bring our troops home. We can allow them to keep our borders safe from illegals that plagued our country and continue a military career if they wish. They definitely deserve better treatment than the way our WWII, Korea and viet Nam soldiers were treated. We have Veterans from some of those wars still trying to get their benefits. Some from Desert storm as well.

Jan. 31, 2007, 11:19 p.m.When I suggested an Audit, I had no idea that was taking place. So some of the money was going for an Olympic swimming pool. This just on my local 11 o'clock news. Glad to see some one in Washington can hit the nail on the head.

Feb. 1, 2007, 4:57 a.m.The lesson: Stay out of the "Nation Building Business".
While we toppled Saddam's corrupt government, it only made ours more corrupt and it unleashed the secular hatred of a citizenry that is not ready for the responsibilities of democracy.
Despite our unwanted interference, when Iraqis kill Iraqis, it's their fingers that pull the triggers; not that this makes it right. Our country was wrong to allow this invasion; but to assume the blame for their civil war is just too grandiose and disingenuous.
Those in our administration that warn of the blood bath to come after our departure only pretend to care, it is another fear-based threat to keep our troops bogged down in Iraq to provide Halliburton and the other profiteers access to the Iraqi oil, the treasue for which they came.
If you're tired of the exploitation by this administration, then we will get behind those who will get our troops out of Iraq. Support Feingold's initiative.

Feb. 1, 2007, 1:59 p.m.I think one of the biggest problems that Americans have with Iraq is their way of life.
What our real problem is - American politicians don't understand that we are sticking our noses into something that is not our decision. Iraq needs to learn its own lessons through their civil war as we did through ours.
When or if we are ever asked to help is when we should help, not when we are gate crashers. We were not invited here, and have been asked to leave...repeatedly.
Feingold is right - it's past time to get out of their war.
Finally, a politician with fresh views and a spine to back him up.
