Damage of Exxon Valdez endures »
Posted by: Eagle_Eye 2 years, 9 months agoAccording to a study out Feb. 15 in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Geological Survey and Alaskan agencies found that oil levels in the sands around the sound are much the same as they were when tests were done five years ago. The study says oil h

Feb. 1, 2007, 5:05 p.m.I worked this spill the month of April into May, this was horror at so many levels. I watched most of the wildlife brought in to be cleaned and cared for just thrash around in seizures as they died a terrible death from the poisoning.
We knew then it wasn't just going to go away and get better. In fact we predicted this was going to be a long term environmental disaster.
Also, along with the whole environment there, the workers are also poisoned and are living with the effects of being chemically contaminated.

Feb. 1, 2007, 5:48 p.m.The reparations that Exxon has thus far provided have been grossly inadequate. With their record profits these past years since the Iraq War, Congress should demand that they filter it back into helping restore the affected areas.
Though, the contamination can not be completely eradicated, it can be greatly improved with a concerted effort. There are natural oil-eating microbacterium that can be used along the shoreline. There are several other techniques that are expensive and yet effective in improving the damaged ecosytem.
I still find it difficutlt just to see the destruction and the suffering wildlife affected by this catastrophe.

Feb. 1, 2007, 5:57 p.m.With Exxon's profits running at approximately $75,000 per minute, I think that they can dig a little deeper to rectify the situation.

Feb. 1, 2007, 5:59 p.m.Exxon is still fighting the legal suits filed by the fishermen they put out of business and individuals who are sick that filed class action suits.

Based on that body of scientific evidence, it is clear that there have been no effects on the environment that remain ecologically significant."

Feb. 1, 2007, 7:01 p.m.I have watched this ever since the spill. They've done nothing, and government hasn't held them accountable. THIS is why people don't want oil drilling. Idiots would ruin our environment, and live on to make obscene profits in the future.

Feb. 1, 2007, 8 p.m.The govt doesn't care about wildlife, people or the earth. All they care about is money and oil, oil and money! Oh yes, and power, of course power.

Feb. 1, 2007, 10:02 p.m.I'll share some thing with my community.
My last day there I walked a path up the side of a mountain. When I got to a place to sit down I could see Prince William Sound and all the oil.
As I sat there I heard (in my head) "This is what your environment looks like, the only difference is you can't see the many chemcials covering it"....BTW, there was no burning bush.
I know this was God telling me to take what I have seen and do what I could to share it.

Feb. 1, 2007, 10:33 p.m.We kill animals, mammals and fish. We kill ourselves. The dependence on crude oil is sickening. We depend on something that kills thousands and pollutes the earth. We spend time trying to build hybrid vehicles, to somewhat help, and big call business doesn't want it because of the decline in fossil fuel consumers. When will the world learn. It's not just America. But if America is so bid and bad, then we should be stepping up the fight to end this. And just wondering, don't you think we would have become smarter about ocean geography when operating this tankers.

Feb. 2, 2007, 1:35 a.m.((Exxon spokesman Mark Boudreaux said in an e-mail, "There have been nearly 350 conference presentations or publications in peer-reviewed journals. How does that effer sleep at night?
I grew up on a ranch in steer country of Kansas, and wildlife is and always has been important to me.
Now that I live in WA, and see the otters and birds on land and the sea life (oysters, mussels, fish...) on a daily basis struggling to survive alongside humans, I have to wonder why we still let moguls like Exxon continue to be held blameless financially for not doing more to fix what they broke, and to make restitution to the humans they have killed as well.
Thanks for the story, and thanks for being there.
You're a good person EE.

Feb. 2, 2007, 9:48 a.m.EE Thanks for the story, it is really sad that Exxon with all of there profits still are screwing around with the people who tried to help as well as our environment. Don't people realize that as we kill off our wildlife it has a direct effect on us as well? It is a shame that so many only become outrage about something when it affects them and their family, but as long as they feel it will not have an effect on them they turn a blind eye. Thank you to all of you out there that jump in and help whether it personally affects you or not. If we had more people out there like you the world would definitely be a better place. Power and money two evils in life.

Feb. 2, 2007, 9:53 a.m.EE...YOU WERE THERE?
Perhaps you told me but I would think I'd would remember.
The pictures are forever haunting and the realization of its aftermath breaks our hearts...I'm so fortunate to call you my friend.

Feb. 2, 2007, 9:55 a.m.Here is something no one knows about, they tried to keep it secret. The Otters and avian wildlife were not the only ones affected.
It was the beginning of spring, the animals were all having babies. All the Otter mothers aborted and those born alive died within hours.
The sea kelp absorbed the oil, the deer were eating the kelp and drinking the water, the bears were coming out of hibernation and eating the dead animals then going back to the den to nurse the young who then died from contaminated mothers milk. It goes on and on into the food chain, total contamination. It won't be over in our life time.

Feb. 2, 2007, 10:37 a.m.Unfortunately the public have been conned by many corporations for decades, and inundated by the right wing media propaganda machine.
Now, even worse, we have the Bush blowhards who couldn't care less about us, the people, let alone, the animals.
Exxon make record profits and brag about it, Bush occupies harmless countries and brags too. It's nauseating to think about nature, animals being wiped out, and we have to endure that criminal Bush in the white house until 2008.

Feb. 2, 2007, 11:17 a.m.I just read today that in the time it takes to read this sentence Exxon will have made $5,000. With the highest Corporate earning in the USA last year of $39.5 billion. I wonder just how much of that is being spent to continue cleaning up Prince William Sound. I would guess zero! and just how much do we pay for a gallon of gas these days?

Feb. 2, 2007, 1:54 p.m.Thank you so much, Eagle Eye for posting this story and for telling us yours. It brings tears to my eyes to imagine the fate of those poor otters and all the other critters that have been and continue to be contaminated by this catastrophe.
Corporations are without soul. They do not care who they hurt, how much it costs, or how low they have to stoop. They will spend more on lawyers than it would take to cover the expense of a cleanup rather than to publicly accept responsibility. And their legal costs will be tax deductible. As if they don't get enough tax breaks from our whacked out Congress that is intent on getting enough lobby money for the next campaign.
There are some who believe that we are close to Peak Oil and that we will run out. I can only hope that happens sooner rather than later. Then, and only then, will Big Oil be out of business.

Feb. 2, 2007, 2:01 p.m.Boycott EVVON/Mobile, let's take a look at their profit report next quarter and see how much they make if we don't buy.
Buy from: BP (Beyond Petroleum aka British Petroleum) and Shell, these 2 companies are far more environmentaly responsible and sensitive. Also doing more for alternative energy.

A story that stirs within, and brings forth a will to fight in whatever way possible, the self serving oil giants. Let's all investigate further, where Ex/Mob. has it's interests, and boycot those as well.

Feb. 2, 2007, 3:18 p.m.LOL, you are a blind fool, go drink from the water of Prince William Sound. Even better, I know a town next to Little Rock Air Base where they made the DDT, go there and look at the people and number of handicaped children. Please be sure to drink some water while there.

Feb. 2, 2007, 3:45 p.m.Eagle Eye, you are an angel-I just wish we could unite on a grander scale than they are against this disgusting corruption we call big business and government and do something about this. Our environment is so very fragile; simply a gift from God. I just cannot understand why everyone in this world cannot see it. All the answers, everything we need was put on this earth by Him for our benefit, and all it takes are the choice few (or many) greedy son of a bitches who have their self serving attitudes to do so much damage to this gift of planet. If one lives to be, say, 100 at the most, that is still a very small speck in the history of time. 100 years from now, they won't even exist anymore. To do that much damage and just walk away simply amazes me, especially when their profits and pockets grow larger every day. I don't know how they sleep at night, but they do. However, they will get theirs in the end. The gov't is to blame for not stopping it, but the lobbiests keep them fat too.
