    BBC UPDATE:

    11:07 GMT

There are reports that a number of protesters have barricaded themselves inside the mosque.

The protest was sparked by renovation work on Temple Mount, known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif.

Palestinians say it could damage the foundations of the compound.

The Israeli authorities say renovations are needed to safeguard the ancient site and have guaranteed that there will be no structural damage to the area.

      BBC UPDATE:

      11:55 GMT

Violence has broken out at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque after Israeli police moved in to break up crowds of stone-throwing Palestinian protesters.

The BBC's Matthew Price in Jerusalem - the sensitivity of this site that it has the potential to trigger much greater violence elsewhere.

There have been widespread protests among Palestinians and the wider Muslim world since the excavations began on Tuesday.

The compound area has been a flashpoint for violence since Israel captured it during the 1967 Middle East war.

Interesting. For all the years the Wakf was illegally trashing the Temple Mount and destroying Jewish artifacts, there was no news. The Israelis are rebuiding a ramp that collapsed and the world is up in arms.

          Gee...what a shock.

There are, no doubt, a number of Jew-haters who will respond with their various theories. I've blocked most of you so don't be surprised if I don't respond to your rants.

No Doubt about it,,,,, those that hate Israel and Bush never pass on the chance to do so, no matter what the subject matter. In fact they seem to have the ability to connect ANY subject to them, it's very obvious in most of the threads.

If the Islamic authorities do not allow the Israelis to carry out the repairs and strengthen the foundations of the mosque there is a chance this very old mosque could collapse of its own free will.!

hey, how about getting militant Muslim construction squads to lay the foundations for the buildings at Ground Zero?

Holy sites are important places, not just for your own religions. People should have mutual respect.

We are only hearing from one side. I can't say who is right or wrong. But am sure whoever makes the changes is going to favors their own religion. It would contaminate the holy place it is not just "regular renovations". If Muslims were going to do the renovations Jews would have complained too. It is a war zone. I don't think it would ever end.... Maybe on JUDGEMENT DAY!!! Ooh not even then because that is where it is all going to start.

I think one person from each religion (Christian, Jews and Muslim) should be present on site to make sure it is just "regular renovations to the foundations" and nothing fishy is going on.

It is only obvious that it doesn't matter what religion you belong to. You will always have someone disagreeing about something being done to improve something or to have some understanding. Its like the saying goes "Don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up".

Maybe it would be better to just demolish everything all around the place then there would be nothing to fight about. Then again you can't win either way.

The 34-month old Al-Aqsa Intifada broke out in September 2000, in the wake of a provocative visit to the mosque by the then Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon, former Prime Minister.

Since then, Israeli police in the occupied east Jerusalem has banned issuing permits to Jews to have access to the mosque.

its not the renovations the islamic fascists are really upset about..its the archeological work being done under the site--these islamic monsters have said that jews were not anywhere in the middle east before 1949--what if evidence is found under the mosque of the jewish temple that was on the site before the muslims detroyed it..hmmm..another zionist conspiracy i guess--backed of course by bush somehow--that sounds crazy to me but i know this will be supported here on libscape

If SOMEONE would just PLEASE totally destroy these old buildings, maybe this would FINALLY go away. Do they REALLY have nothing better to argue about than this? Yet another bit of evidence that they are clinically insane...

I refer to ANYONE who spends time worring about an old building, or something that (supposedly) happened thousands of years ago. Move on. Get over it. Come On Down to the 21st century. Get a (modern) life. It looks like the ONLY way any of that will happen is if all these old building disappear. Regular dust or radioactive dust -- doesn't matter, long as they are gone. Wouldn't hurt if Mecca disappeared either...

Has there ever been a region more miserably misnamed than the "Holy Land"? Its very name is a curse, for if it wasn't thought of as Holy, it wouldn't be so fiercely contended as it has been, over the centuries. I prefer to think of the place as the a**hole of the Mediterranean.

I have an idea, but it is a little off topic.

How about if we hire the muslim suicide bombers to work in our coal mines and strip mines. They could just march into the deep recesses of the coal mines and blow themselves up.

It seems like a very logical match of skill set and job requirement.

                                              Just an idea.

I wish that all muslims were contained in one geographical region and we would give them five years to Darwin down their population to a manageable size.
