I think George Lucas may be the only one who actually believes this.

You've got to be kidding me. I wonder which one he thinks is the best one.

Poor Lucas. It sounds like he left the cap off of the model glue again.

Did his kids really direct it? That would explain how even the best actors turned in the most wooden roles of their lives.

If he really believes that Empire was the worst of the saga then, he really has lost his ability to understand what makes a movie worth watching. (Which has already been illustrated in triplicate by episodes 1-3.) However, if you look at the context in which he made this statement, he more than likely said this as a friendly jab at the recipient of the award he was presenting at the time.

I would agree with George. I don't like it as much as the others. And every time I watch it I say that. :)

This tiny comment by George Lucas is not verified. But if he was talking about the new giftsets that adds all that digital garbage and extra lines, IT does drop the movie a star imo.

I compared an old VHS version to the new DVD, and Darth Vader talking to the Emporer who looked nothing like Palpatine, left alot to the imagination... "We have a new enemy in the Force, Luke Skywalker..." but the dvd says something like 'Luke Skywalker, son of Anakin Skywalker blah blah blah.' It spoils the whole mystery of the film. from 2 minutes to 5. Sometimes longer is not better. Then in Jedi, they digitally replaced Anakin Skywalker and made him the young kid again. Someplace online I read about watching the movies in a different order. Starting with the origional, then go to Episode 1, then Empire, then 2 and 3, then Jedi.

Empire -- without a doubt, the BEST movie in the series. I remember sitting in the theater as it ended -- a long, long time ago -- checking my watching and saying, "It can't be over yet!!"

After waiting on pins and needles for three years, came the monumentally disappointing "Return of the Jedi."

I guess that's why every film in the series since has been awful. He simply can't tell a good film from a bad one.

If this is true it would be the the most hilarious thing that George has ever said, because he did not have very much to do with making this movie. It was not directed by him and he only wrote the story not the screen play. Check it out IMDB which means he is bashing it because he wasn't in total control of the movie. For some reason Lucas comes out saying the craziest things, after the last starwars movie came out he said he only wanted to make movies people wouldn't like.

He must have been drunk! Most people I know would point out to Episode II, The attack of the Clones as the hands down worst.

I've never met anyone who didn't agree that it was the BEST of the original 3! Also, it is the only one not directed by Lucas which may be why he does not like it. His last three stunk on ice except the last one which was tolerable.
