OpEd: Gaming for the Fiery Tomorrow »

Posted by: populist 2 years, 9 months ago

As the US-Iran standoff escalates toward its inevitable denouement, analysts are busily gaming scenarios that may lead to the commencement of hostilities. Only the naive take solace in the illusion of peace, for it will take nothing less than a miracle of biblical proportions for either peace or de-escalation to prevail.

It will take an act of Congress strong enough to tell the Bush Administration Bush, Cheney and all the top lieutenants involved in violating the act WILL be impeached for having gotten us into one disastrous war based on at best cooked "intelligence" and then having learned nothing from the mistake, making a bad situation worse by launching a second illegal war.

The article's author is somewhat pessimistic ya think? I'm still optimistic enough to hope that cooler heads can prevail, but I'm not so naive as to think that an intelligent response to Iran will be forthcoming from the neocons.

When dealing with the insanity of fundamentalist Islamics there is no hope of peace. They want only to 1. kill Westerners and 2. make the entire world be fundamentalist Islamics, mostly by killing anyone who won't convert.

It is necessary to plan for every concievable contingency possible. Just because a plan is discussed doesn't mean it will be carried out. There are probably scenarios discussed as to what we might do if the UK was to become an Islamic country, or France a dictatorship.

We are talking of cultural differences and this ain't never going to end. Even signing of a peace treaty won't mean a thing for those who lost their families.

The drums keep beating. And wingnuts still abound. Accusing France of hiding nuclear warheads under the Eiffel Tower? Oh, give me a break.

Bush and Co. need to be impeached, stopped, arrested and tried. They have led us into this nightmare scenario and have now brought the world to the brink of meltdown, both economic and nuclear.

We also need to make sure that none of them escape to Paraguay. They have in a short six years made this world a far more dangerous place. They have painted the American flag with a big target and have exponentially increased the hatred toward our nation.

"During a time of war (your) rights take a back seat to everything else! How do ya like them apples.!?"

What happened to the oath of enlistment you swore when you first enlisted?

"I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic..."

As part of your oath, you swore to defend the Constitution and the rights it grants its citizens. Your statement "your rights take a back seat to everything else" violates the oath you swore to your country, unless martial law has been declared (which it hasn't).

If you're so eager to abrogate your Constitutional rights and freedoms, then I suggest you move to a totalitarian state like North Korea, where you can brag about your military service all you want. It lends no credence to your posts here.

Real Marines, particulary those with combat experience, see no need to brag. If you really were a Marine, you were undoubtably a REMF.

It seems to me that 2 or 3 people are obsessed with anything negative pertaining to Bush , Iraq, Israel and Iran. Their threads somehow make it to the front page every day with their curt one line blurb to start things off in hope of yet another orgasmic denunciation of the Bush administration. I know that's what this site is about but jeez how many time can Chicken Little decry the sky is falling?

Here's a quote by Justice William O. Douglas that everyone might want to consider. I think it's applicable today, with the possibility of an air strike on Iran, (and God-only-knows what consequences might result), and the "shut up, and we'll handle this" thinking that the neo-cons want us to swallow:

"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. It is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air - however slight - lest we become victims of the darkness."
