Ohio food stamp usage increases 71% »
Posted by: moemebe 2 years, 9 months agoCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The number of Ohioans receiving food stamps increased by 71 percent over six years, a sure indicator of a poor economy but also a measure of decreased stigma over the help, the Department of Job and Family Services reported. "Food stamps" has become a misnomer, now that the aid comes in the form of a debit card...

Feb. 11, 2007, 4:14 p.m.This should not be happening in Ohio nor anyother state nor place on earth. Human beings should be paid a living & humane wage. Not turned into beggars & live in poverty.
Here in the Real world, more Americans are spiraling into poverty, hunger, becoming ill & homelessness. Wonder what other states, increases in food stamps look like? This just does not sound like the good economy that our Rep's & Government leaders keep touting in their speeches.
It seems that opinions about the economy, depends on whose bank accounts, wages, and other qualities of life people are actually living.
Thanks for the article.

Feb. 11, 2007, 7:15 p.m.That's all you hear these days---the economy is great! I call BS! I see my clients losing small business incomes, businesses closing, trying to sell houses before forecloser happens. Believe it or not the prices of certain things--like renting---are rising. 71% food stamp increase over a 6 year period is substantial...so who's gettin' all the money?

Feb. 11, 2007, 8:17 p.m.I find it ironic that in the same newscast that hunger and obesity are both epidemics in this country.
Go figure.

Feb. 11, 2007, 9:07 p.m.As nice as it was to hear that the vet quoted in the story is pursuing a degree, I couldn't help but feel sad that there are people putting their lives on the iine for our country who are obliged to rely on public assistance. It's just so hard to reconcile that idea with the several hundred billion dollar that have been spent on this war so far. Blows me away...

Feb. 11, 2007, 11:59 p.m.Guys,
Let's check out the "flip" side. Stigma, big deal, but that also shows the poor population is growing. Don't know 'bout how many, but the poor population is growing by "leaps-and-bounds" thanx to...

Feb. 12, 2007, 12:57 a.m.If you can't feed 'em, don't breed 'em. We require proof of financial responsibility to drive a car (unless you're an illegal alien, of course, in which case anything is okay), time to start requiring it for parents. No money, no job, pregnant? Here's your gift certificate to the abortion clinic down the street.

Feb. 12, 2007, 2:12 a.m.Oh ya Ohio. The place where Bush put a bunch of workers out of jobs. Wow no food huh? Bummer. Did you know that in New Orleans the kids have no drinking water in the public schools, no books, but they do have an abundance of security guards on the campus' in fact, they outnumber the teachers now.
Welcome to Bush's Land of the Oppressed Home of the Afraid.

Feb. 12, 2007, 3:17 a.m.Craftmaid Cabinets in Middlefield, Ohio, is about to close their doors. 700 out of work in a small town. I wonder if there was a 71% increase in anything else over the last 6 years?

Feb. 12, 2007, 8:50 a.m.At least they got food stamps. This morning on my way to work, there was a disabled veteran begging for food. This is too depressing , we will need more tax cuts to cheer us up.

Feb. 12, 2007, 8:53 a.m.I think most of the increase is due to foreigners coming here and getting on welfare.....here in Clevland i belive there are more foreigners than Americans anymore....
They come to our country and get on our government assistance and milk it for all they can.......I just saw it yesterday in Marcs....this foreigner had a cart full of food and paid with a government assitance card...... here I work two jobs and can even afford on half a cart of food...her tab was 126.54...that is all the money I have for a month to eat off....

Feb. 12, 2007, 8:58 a.m.ok!! and here it is. finally the truth comes out. all of us are being taxed and paying more and more utilities to live here. The cost goes up and up and where does it end eh? the poor keep getting poorer and now the middle class cant keep up
with the bill! more gas money! more bills! higher costs! well thats interesting... no more money coming in on my paycheck!!!
I am from columbus ohio and this ****** has go to stop somewhere.
No jobs here either! where are people supposed to work? taco bell? the dry cleaners? there is no money in that, cant even pay the bills.
business's keep going under here, layoffs left and right. seems kinda wierd that is not in the news either. seem our media keeps telling us everything is ok!! ******! do not believe your media or newpapers they are all lying to us.

Feb. 12, 2007, 9:07 a.m.This is so sad......I live in a suburb of Cleveland and now they say that poverty has hit the suburbs as well...I believe it to be very true....
Poverty is everywhere in America.....the problem is we have elected officers that are very wealthy and have no idea what it feels like to hungry, cold, and have to make sacrifices...
They have plenty of money....so they forgotten about the common working man.....or woman.....
It sickens me that they spend billions of tax payers money but yet they dont have to repay it back ....

Feb. 12, 2007, 10:22 a.m.Yes that is true. If I go to the social security office to pick up a report on the names of my jobs and how many I work. It is so crowded with foreign people and their kids.
I am sure they are signing themselves and their kids up for ssi. People do not believe you can get social security without paying into it but you can.
They get about 600 a month. If a lot of kids are too lazy to learn english and their parents to lazy to teach it-they can sign their kids up for disability.
Funny how so many people cannot speak english-yet they have no trouble finding government offices to sign up for freebies.
Ohio also does not have as much retail as we do in PA. Not that it is high paying work. But I wonder if food stamps have increased here also?

Feb. 12, 2007, 11:06 a.m.A hundred years ago the "American Dream" was providing every person, regardless of race, religion or creed, the opportunity to better their lot in life through persistence, determination and a pantload of hard work.
Today the "American Dream" is government subsidized lethargy.
According to the AP the rate of savings for the average American family was in the negative (-1%) in 2006, which means people are spending more than they're making. The last time this happened was in 1933, during the Great Depression.
The latest generation of Americans is being criticized for a lack of work ethic, an inability to think independently, and a propensity for risky social behavior.
Looks like fiscal irresponsibility should be added to the list.

Feb. 12, 2007, 11:41 a.m.A lot of people are making less working than they used to make 10-15 years ago.
Also the high cost of gasoline and utilities. 200% health care costs-if you have it.
The gov. has shown us they take little or no responsibility for anyone except the corporations.
I do not think we should be expected to foot the bill for health care and pensions for gov. officals at the state, local or federal level.
If we have to pay for it-they can pay their own way too.

Feb. 12, 2007, 12:05 p.m.I really don't know much about the elected officials in Ohio. What exactly is the Governor and legislature doing to attract more business to the state??
Anyone know why so many companies there have closed or moved?
Sounds like their elected officials have not really been doing much to help.
We all like to complain about the Feds, but states that are very active in recruiting business and helping start up businesses seem to be having less of a problem

Feb. 12, 2007, 12:16 p.m.There seems to be a difference in what the government is
telling us and what is actually happening. Here in the
Ozarks there are more people at or below the poverty level
than above the level.

Feb. 12, 2007, 1:04 p.m.For anyone who does not know. You must be without savings,Iras, life insurance and an auto over $1500.
If that many people are that bad off-it is a concern.
The same people who criticize Clinton for looking the other way on terrorism
They should also accuse Bush of looking the other way on healthcare, job issues, college costs or for anything at all domestic.
It will not be long till there is nothing left to defend here. We are free as long as we can afford it.
