Feb. 16, 2007, 9:30 a.m.We broke it and I see no way to fix it. This is a tragic outcome of a wrongheaded invasion of a sovereign nation that had done nothing to us.
If I were living in Iraq, I would be trying to get out as well. I hope there will be a safe haven for them all. I hope we get our people home soon.
I hope we impeach Bush and Cheney both.
Hope springs eternal

Feb. 16, 2007, 1:47 p.m.we're the newcomers, trying to preserve world peace.>>>>>
How do you preserve peace by starting a war? Has it worked?

Feb. 16, 2007, 10:23 a.m.No region is "broken", and there is a clear way to fix it, and that is through teaching peace and not war. We have to start teaching peace in the schools, the houses of worship and in public forums in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we also have to distribute books freely on peace and harmony amongst people. We HAVE to stop the fighting and lay down all the weapons. For a great book on peace, go to ebay.com or to lulu.com and type in korana of mother goddess. the war will escalate and continue and it could take the US down if we don't change our ways. War only get you in the end. The simplest solutions are right in front of us and have already been given to us. Our hearts have become hardened because we fill our own minds with hate, aggression, violence, self centeredness and greed. We as a people can change that, and all we have to do is demand it from our government. Until we do, we don't deserve peace; live by the sword, die by the sword, that's what we deserve

Feb. 16, 2007, 11:03 a.m.You mean they don't appreciate the "freedom" we've brought them enough to stick around? It's just sad what we've done to them. It's sad what Saddam did to them. It's sad what they are doing to one another. The whole situation is just sad.

Feb. 16, 2007, 11:25 a.m.I can't think of anything to say. I feel terrible. So many things like this happen and have happened for all the wrong reasons. What sucks is the people are powerless to stop it. It is fanatisism that has inundated everything that can be used for the common good. I don't think that the idea that bad people will get what they deserve applies any more, just look at whats going on these days, everywhere. We are stuck in a situation ready to ignite that was based on deception and scare tactics.I think we need to get the hec out of there. We are in the middle of something that has been going on over there for a long time. We cannot fix the whole world. We cannot afford it.

Feb. 16, 2007, 11:30 a.m.But we cannot leave there unless and until we leave them with firm teachings of peace, a means for peace, and understanding and longing for the concept.

Feb. 16, 2007, 12:07 p.m.When do we finally understand that there is not victory to be had in Iraq. Until there is a winner in this fight, a local winner the insurgency will not stop and the people will continue suffer.
There is no doubt we will win every conventional battle we fight there. Our guys are as a rule better equipped and trained and we have far more resources but excluding some unforseen act of divine will it won't make any difference. Even if the fighting slacks off they just go into hiding and wait for the right opportunity like Hesbollah did in Lebanon
You can't kill enough of these idiots and the chance we had to bring them to heel has come and gone. Lets leave and concentrate on battles that are winnable and make sense.
I heard on one tv news cast that Al Queda is using $200 a month pay checks to recruit new members in Afghanistan while we spend billions in Iraq and can't manage one public works project in Afghanistan to counter Taliban and Al Queda influence

Feb. 16, 2007, 12:29 p.m.I think our leader should make room on his Texas ranch for the Iraqi displaced. He is the culprit, even Saddam did not cause this much violence and death. But he is the decider and decision maker.
I envision a tent city along side his steers.
Yet, we still have almost two more years of his decision, Oh my.

Feb. 16, 2007, 2:10 p.m.History has proven that isolationism does not work. Of course war rarely does either.

Feb. 16, 2007, 6:05 p.m." If some dictator is killing his people, it is his and his country's problem."
That position used to be called reactionary when Republicans held it.
It is still reactionary.

Feb. 16, 2007, 12:56 p.m.Kserkhar - On point, our government should take care of our own citizens first and foremost. Iraq was the blunder of the century by this Monarch and with acquiescence from most of our inane elected representatives.
The worst part of this whole debackle is that we still have to endure two more years of this lunatic in office. What further idiotic and malicious acts will he commit?
This government must be taken back by the electorate and refrain from being the moral authority within the world.
Enough is enough of this faulty logic in the White House.

Feb. 16, 2007, 1:02 p.m.I read a couple of days ago that Bush was allowing 7000 Iraqi refugees into the US. It's our problem now and we shouldn't dump them off on others that had nothing to do with this war.

Feb. 16, 2007, 1:42 p.m.District attorney who can't try a case, police department that has police who cannot write a report ,and reduced requirements for police because the ranks are so few. a hurricane ravaged city with a population half of what it used to be and a tax base to follow.

Feb. 16, 2007, 2 p.m.This article says nothing of the talent drain. Those who were successful enough to afford to get out left long ago. That number included many doctors, lawyers and IT professionals. So who leads this new nation? The theocrats aren't leaving (although Al-Sadr did run for the border) and they continue to influence Maliki. He knows if they desert him his support is gone.
Iraq has been a failed nation since it's creation by the British. It took someone as utterly ruthless as Saddam to bring order. Sad but true.

Feb. 16, 2007, 2:23 p.m.If the Democrats cannot repulse Bush's idea concerning Iraq I guess the next best conclusion is to break the country up into 3 separate states. Anything else will not work, especialy the SURGE, which is doomed to failure.
I thought I heard even Ollie North admit that the troops in Iraq are of the opinion that the SURGE will not work. Now if thats true, amazing coming from an arch hawk conservative.

Feb. 16, 2007, 2:41 p.m.They are fleeing? Why? We brought them freedon, stability, democracy and all that, and now they want to run away from all those good things?

Feb. 16, 2007, 2:50 p.m.Yes. They're cowards. They want to come here instead of fighting back for their own sakes. So, naturally, we'll want as many of them here as we can get

Feb. 16, 2007, 3:42 p.m.LOOK WHAT WAR DOES - who does it affect? innocent people who get caught in the middle of some prematurely decided war - and the children, babies, mothers, fathers, elderly; young adults suffer... I want world Peace - how about the goverments from every country come together and agree NOT to start war BUT only on the conditions it is as defence on their own land... Countries should set up Security forces along their borders and shore lines... how did men in with high responsibility positions ever decide WAR was a solution??? i dont get it!!!! they need to event squirmish as an OLYMPIC sport to satisfy that masculine aggression or maybe a good/close relationship with God/Allah will bring peace to their soul. Peace peace peace and MORE peace to you all!

Feb. 16, 2007, 3:43 p.m.No doubt there are ths who enjoy doing battle,
presidents, prime ministers, and kings.
Let's all build a shelf where they can fight among themselves
and leave the people be who love to sing.
Come and sing a simple song of freedom.
Sing it like you've never sung before, etc.

Feb. 16, 2007, 3:45 p.m.I WONDER OUT OF CURIOUSITY - looking back in history, do you think FRANCE regrets or is slightly concerned about their psychic abilities concerning the present they gave America? The Statue of Liberty?

Feb. 16, 2007, 3:50 p.m.Better question - I wonder if they feel remotely guilty about having caused three dispirate factions to be together in a made-up country in the first place. That country being Iraq.
You see, the middle east was far different before the English and French decided to divide up the oil spoils after the Germans were sent packing. You can lay the strife at their doorstep
