Honda says odometers on 6M cars click off mileage at too-quick pace »

Honda (HMC) is notifying 6 million owners of Hondas and Acuras that they are entitled to warranty extensions and, in some cases, payments because odometers in their vehicles rolled up miles too fast. That made warranties expire too soon and hit some lease customers with excess-mileage penalties.

I don't know if anyone realizes the dollars involved here. If you have 6 million vehicles racking up miles at a rate of 4 % faster than they should, and 45 percent of those cars are leased, you are talking huge numbers. 2.7 million cars are leased. Leases allow 36,000 miles for three years with .10 cents for overages. If 4% of 36,000 is 1440 miles, then Honda is collecting upwards of 144 dollars from each of the leases in overages. That's 547 MILLION dollars! Honda knew full well what it was doing. It was blatantly ripping off the consumer. I don't care how well the cars are made, what this amounts to is theft. Someone should go to jail.
