Netscape 9 and Social News »

Netscape 9 will include built-in tools to share, vote for, and discuss interesting things you find on the Web directly from the browser's URL bar. We feel that having these tools in the browser by default will introduce the idea of social news to a whole new set of users, and it should make it easier for those who are already familiar with the concept.

Very cool indeed! But, will this only work when I'm browsing Netscape or will it be able to tell if the URL I'm currently browsing has been submitted already, and provide a link?

THAT would be the coolest feature.

Will it fix the problems my husband and I have had of late. The browser just quits for no reason at all. Have switched to alternating between Explorer and Foxfire. They, at least work.

I must agree with Amazing1. During this past week not only has Netscape 8.12 "not responding" on my desktop but my laptop as well. When checking with my friends, everyone seems to be experiencing the same problem. However, nothing can be found with a google search or on the Netscape site so we have been switching to Foxfire.

Have been a hardcore Netscape user, except for version 6.0, since the beginning, but until Netscape admits a problem exists, I and others do not have the time to use a browser that will not work.

What is sad is M$ just continues to buy out the competition and refuses to use clean html so ALL browsers are compatible.

            Netscape will be missed.

Still running 7.2 to get the e-mail imported. Is 9 going to allow this? Otherwise it's Firefox time and we've been on Netscape for 20 years I think!

I've been having troubles with Netscape 8.1 freezing up on me the last few days, too.

You guys should really use the support forum on this site. Netscape had a problem over the last few days where Netscape 8 was freezing up periodically due to a server pinging failure. As the problem occured over the weekend, and Netscape doesn't have a 24/7 browser team (don't think anyone does) the problem was addressed at the earliest possible date (Monday Feb 19th 2007) and is now rectified.

Additionally, the code which caused the problem in the first place has been removed from the upcoming Netscape 8.1.3 update, and has NOT be included in the soon coming Netscape 9, so this problem should not resurface.

So what do we do until 8.1.3? When will it be released? Can't use Netscape if it does not respond.

InternetOutlaw,Thanks for your help and suggestions. Have always loved Netscape and could not stand all that IE stuff. Are you saying that now that IE and Netscape are owned by the same company, I won't be able to stand any of it?

meoknet, if you cannot access Netscape, how can you access the support forum as you suggest?

I've always loved Firefox from day 1. Has some crashes in the early 1.xx versions but since then its been all cake and candy for me. Internet Explorer 7 is a cheap carbon copy of it. This Version #9 sounds interesting. I want to try it, even as beta so I can supply honest feedback. 1 more good reason to keep me away from IE.

I, too, have been having "lock up" problems with Nutscrape - both the 8.* and the 7.2 on Linux. So has everyone at the office, and also on their home computers. Firefox 2 doesn't SEEM to have this problem. Couple of points: FF2 download is about 8 MB, NS8.* is about double that. Related to the problem? Netscape doesn't even want to install on my Fedora Core 6_64. Will Nutscrape ever come back to the Linux market again? I've switched over to FF2 until Netscape gets their sh*t back together.
