Feb. 23, 2007, 7:10 a.m.Sleep deprivation and lack of running water causes someone to rape children and murder people????? Better get the truckers off the road as soon as possible!! The psychologist should be brought up on charges of being a fraud and a charlatan.

Feb. 23, 2007, 9:03 a.m.Technology Expert,
You're a disgrace....What is the point of even printing this crap other than to imply that ALL of our soldiers are like this...
I choose to believe THIS story which NEVER makes it to the mainstream liberal media...Gee, I wonder why, Technology Expert ?
Shame on you...

Feb. 23, 2007, 9:05 a.m.I'm waiting for the "all soldiers are rapist baby-killers" crowd to weigh in on this - ignoring the suspicion that Cortez was probably a scumbag in civilian life, too. It's happened in other wars? That may be, but not to everyone, or even to a large minority. Thousands of soldiers have gone through much more intense combat for longer periods, and still managed not to become murderous rapists. You'll probably find that people who violate the laws and basic human decency in combat generally do the same no matter where they are.

Feb. 23, 2007, 9:07 a.m.Dude, don't shoot the messenger. The disgrace is this soldier and his murdering mob buddies. Clearly, only a fool would believe that these savages represent our soldiers as a whole. What is clear to me is that at least in this case, we tried and firmly punished the criminal(s). Our GIs have to do and endure the unthinkable everyday over there; sometimes a few lose it badly. It is sad but no excuse for this type of barbarism.
I am still proud of our soldiers.

Haven't seen that one.....too pro-military I quess.

Feb. 23, 2007, 12:17 p.m.If he would have done it in the US, the same liberals that are calling for his head now, would be blaming society, his problems in home life, drugs, ect. And he would be out in 5 years.

Feb. 23, 2007, 9:42 a.m.To ONLY focus on the negatives of our soldiers disgraces them and the very people that we are trying to liberate...

Feb. 23, 2007, 10:29 a.m.No, I blame the idiot libs like yourself who continue to spew their liberal anti-american hate speech, which I am quite sure our soldiers appreciate...Occupation? LOL
You're so funny...You make me laugh..Did Al Franken feed you that line or Colmes?
You act like you are a representative of the miliatry and speaking for them...The majority don't think the way your tiny little brain does...They want to serve our country and get Iraq on its feet, to become less dependent and more independent so they can come home...
I don't blame anybody, except YOU for being anti-American, loser...

Feb. 23, 2007, 9:45 a.m.There are WAY more negative stories about our troops (i.e. Gitmo)than there are stories of the good they are doing over there...Like I said in my ealier posts...Where are the good moments? If you are ONLY going to focus on the negatives of what are soldiers do and not offset with the good, how does that paint a rosy picture of our military?
I'm ok with balance....But THERE ISN'T ANY.....

Feb. 23, 2007, 9:58 a.m.Please provide some proof...It's easy to say there are PLENTY of good stories, but they mostly get blanketed by the negative stuff...
I think you would agree...
but then again, maybe not...
I guess I'm just ranting and making this stuff up in my head...
Sorry to have bothered...

Feb. 23, 2007, 10:26 a.m.I think it's just good to see justice being served for an unacceptable crime.
No matter your chosen profession, rape and murder should never be accepted as normal conduct. And hopefully will continue to be reported upon.
As far as the positive stories of our soldiers being reported, I do see plenty on our local newscasts in Colorado.
I love the special reports of how soldiers from our area are meeting on a one on one basis with the iraqi civilians. It gives me at least some small encouragement about all that is happening over there.
Reports from the local level...that's where our usefulness begins anyway.

Feb. 23, 2007, 10:32 a.m." Cortez said this week that former private Steven D. Green raped the girl in front of him; shot her father, mother and sister; and then shot her in the head. He also testified that the soldiers attempted to burn the girl's body; burned their own clothes; and threw the murder weapon, an AK-47, into a canal in an attempt to dispose of the evidence."
Nice soldiers.
real nice soldiers.

Feb. 23, 2007, 11:05 a.m.NOTHING and I mean NOTHING excuses this behavior-war, mental illness, fatigue, orders, cadances, whatever. Rape is rape! And to rape a child is even more despicable. THen to turn around and murder the family, wtf? I can only assume that was in order to cover the entire thing up. I would bet they knew exactly what they were doing and they knew it was wrong!!
And it's a damn shame that anyone would attempt to rationalize such brutality with lame excuses like exhaustion, fatigue, harsh conditions, etc. I respect and applaud our soldiers. And I can only imagine what they go through on tour. But NOTHING that can be said makes this understandable nor okay. It infers the idea that they weren't responsible for their actions.
Had it been an Iraqi raping an American, this forum would be singing another tune. But I guess that goes back to the comment that we think of everything non-American as inhuman or savage and it's just the opposite.
You don't have to be Christian but if you are AT LIKE IT

Feb. 23, 2007, 11:09 a.m.want some positive stories about the troops? Try reading Newsday LI - its online & there are positive stories everyday.
Yes here in the liberal enclave of NY we are constantly made aware of the sacrifices of the troops & their families at home. Most of these guys were working stiffs called to duty & have given up the comforts we have & the time we have to argue here.

Feb. 23, 2007, 11:11 a.m.Now, here's a question that doesn't seem to be being asked, why is there anyone defending this soldiers actions? What he did is abhorrent. It was wrong and he must be punished. However, the question must also be asked if this is something that he would have done under 'normal' circumstances.
This soldier and the others is an excellent example of why we should try and rehabilitate people instead of just locking them up forever and throwing away the key.

Feb. 23, 2007, 11:11 a.m.O and this doesn't make me think that the militairy is bad. Just like in every aspect of life there is good and bad. And we must deal with them both. The bad should be punished and the good should be acknowledged, if not rewarded.

Feb. 23, 2007, 11:18 a.m.Bkumm, you're right. I've always asked "What is going through that persons head" when hearing about the things that people do to one another. And I do believe in rehabilitation, but SOME (not all) people are beyond gone.
And he was being defended b/c he still has the right for council that is allegedly our rights as citizens. Interestingly, the one that gets tried in a KY court may have a worse time. B/c the militairy likes to protect themselves, whether that be through fast tracking the trial (trying to hush it) or actually protecting the criminal. Whatever the case they shouldn't worry about how the militairy looks due to the crime, they should show that they don't tolerate that behavior whether it be during wartime or not. Live by the standards that you fight for!

Feb. 23, 2007, 11:24 a.m.It's always disturbing to hear about everyday civillians (regardless of their country), in this case a child, who has nothing to do with the political problems leading up wars. They're just STUCK in the middle of it and become victimized by these circumstances.
Unforunately all of these stories are an atrocious reality in todays world, whether a part of war -or- on our own streets with stray bullets flying, or rape of ANYONE, child or adult. And children EVERYWHERE are forced to grow up really really fast too, for various reasons, which is another grim reality.

Feb. 23, 2007, 11:48 a.m.I dont know how many of you are militray and war vets, but I never heard a USMC cadence about raping and killing, maybe that was the one the rejects sang on their way out because they failed the psych eval in week 2.
In the military we are trained to survive not kill. Big difference. The frauds who assaulted the civilians should be castrated and left to crawl around Iraq. But the Army always had weak morals. It doesnt surprise me. It is common practice around Ft Eustice for the soldiers to fool around with 14, 15 yr olds. Now the Army is waiving criminal records and allowing petty criminals into the army in larger numbers. In the Navy, if you are found within the confines of a brothel you will have a captains mast and its not pretty. I seen people get admin septd for beeing seen in the company of a hooker, crude jokes, calling females a derrogatory name and even crude gestures.
Not all military people are jerks, those who make us look bad tend to be jerks before even joining.

Feb. 23, 2007, 12:08 p.m.Why didn't he get death penalty? He can be free man in 10 years and he will continue to rape but this time it might be you daughter or sister or someone you care about. Will you then say he is defending our country?
I don't understand. How can you defend him and justify what he did. He clearly knew what he was doing. He got rid of the evidences.
TechnologyExpert, thank you I wanted to know what is going to happen to him... it seems like just a slap on his hand

Feb. 23, 2007, 12:20 p.m.I am surprised that 'Project Innocence' has gotten involved. I mean there is no DNA evidence to support the case against Cortez. That is what they do here in the US.
