Posted by: TimALoftis 2 years, 10 months agoKey lawmakers, backed by party leaders, are drafting legislation that would effectively revoke the broad authority granted to the president in the days Saddam Hussein was in power, and leave U.S. troops with a limited mission as they prepare to withdraw.

Feb. 23, 2007, 2:17 p.m.I hope the Democrats will be successful in limiting the war authority of this president. He has taken far too many liberties with his "signing statements" which have pretty much negated Congressional input.
In addition, limiting the mission in preparation for withdrawal is the right step to my way of thinking. It was a wrong headed invasion and occupation from the git-go. It was done poorly and the country is now in the midst of civil war.
We need more diplomacy and fewer guns.

Feb. 23, 2007, 2:26 p.m.Republicans don't give a Rats AZZ about anything but self serving issues. Bush & Friends are making too much money off contracts that are their own interests to even give any thought as to what Dems think ,,or anyone for that matter.

Feb. 23, 2007, 2:32 p.m.The dumbocrats sure are living up to their name. This failed once already and now they are going to try it again. I believe it will take a Constitutional amendment to pull this off. YOU'RE IN OVER YOUR HEADS DUMBOCRATS! GIVE IT UP WHILE U CAN!

Feb. 23, 2007, 2:40 p.m.The congress made an error in Judgement in its approval of Bush's war powers against Iraq. All people make mistakes. Its when you see an error and refuse to correct that mistake is when it becomes obnoxious.
No President should have the power to continue a war the majority of Americans know is wrong. Congress should have the ability, at any time, to rescind what was wrongly given.
The Iraqi's have had 4 years to train for serving and protecting their country. It takes 6 months to train a soldier in the U.S., this scenario does not equate. Like the surge, training future Iraqi's to be faithful soldiers is inherently impossible, as 4 years have proven.
Sincerely hope that Reid & Biden do something to change the direction that Georgie is leading us, downhill. Let those Republicans who are blocking change pay the consequences at the polling booth. Their conservative rhetoric is more importanat to them than American Lives.

Feb. 23, 2007, 2:46 p.m.We need that same drive and spirit we had during World War II. We have to stay and win this war. Iran is now involved supplying weapons to Iraqis to kill our troops. What about that? Iran is all set to take over Iraq once we leave. They want and looks like going to get nuclear weapons.
It's a guaranteed return trip if we pull out...that is IF we can return with China wanting to horde as much oil as it possibly can.
If we should redeploy anything, it should be our B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers back into the theater! If we lose to Islamic terror in Iraq, where will we have a chance to win against it?
We have to win.

What poll or polls are you quoting? Or do you have another source?

Feb. 23, 2007, 2:49 p.m.The Bush idea of democracy is a majority of one and nobody is interested in a man who couldn't be trusted with the American model of democracy. Bush is the man who would be Caesar if the American Congress and the American people would let him.

Feb. 23, 2007, 2:57 p.m.It would not only limit the pres., it also explains to the enemy how and to what degree the pres. is limited, so they can adjust accordingly.
Dems will self destruct by 2008. I've never seen anything like it.

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:01 p.m.Article on most recent poll results - link in article to the poll:
http://mensnewsdaily.com/2007/02/23/when-opinion-p
"Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., intends to present the proposal to fellow Democrats next week, and he is expected to try to add the measure to anti-terrorism legislation scheduled to be debated later this month."
The problem I have with this approach: This is such an important issue that a vote on it should stand alone. It shouldn't be added to another bill.
"Biden added that Congress should make clear what the mission of U.S. troops is: to responsibly draw down, while continuing to combat terrorists, train Iraqis and respond to emergencies."
Are they going to define "terrorists". "Respond to emergencies" seems very broad and could mean almost anything!

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:08 p.m."One version would restrict American troops in Iraq to fighting al-Qaida..."
Picture this: A US Marine on the street in Baghdad taking small arms fire from an insurgent holed up in an abandoned building. The marine takes out a bullhorn. "Uh, excuse me... Mister Insurgent...? Uh, can you tell me... are you an AL-QAIDA fighter, or just one of those other sects that wants to kill me... see, I have to be sure before I try to kill you..."
Great plan. These guys really are master tacticians.

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:15 p.m.Harry Reid? I can't believe this guy. He needs to shut up his hypocrite mouth and say nothing. First he has a peice of property that he has had ( friends in high places, eh,no that would be friends with wide pockets) re-zoned in order to accommondate commercial businesses and sold it for three times the original value. Now he has his three sons working as lobbyist pulling down a cool $ 160,000.00 ( your money folks)Each to lobby for his "friends".And this idiot is a Mormon, that are famous for family values. Values? Gee Harry,I did not know that you created a new definition for the word 'values." But you are in fact the best politician money can buy.

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:28 p.m.it's about darn time congress took some action with teeth to it. now they have to ram it through and make it stick. if they don't they will look foolish & powerless. ...and iraq better not get exponentially worse after draw down...pull back...what ever they wind up calling it.
on the other hand, even if we accomplish nothing more, it is time to get a bit in Bush's mouth.

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:30 p.m.the congress has no such authority, they can not do anything about this. This is all smoke and mirrors. This country last declared war as everyone would like to think it in WWII. Every other conflict has been under the behest of the pres.

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:33 p.m.Burrowow...it's just speculation, not a threat. According to my religion, a man reaps what he sows. There has never been such a display of presidential arrogance in all of American history - NEVER!
I think that the world is waiting and watching to see just what happens to this president.
It is obvious that his rodeo is coming to an end, and justly so.
Even Tony Blair has seen 'the writing on the wall'...or was that Nebekanezar?
Anyway, it's food for thot.

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:40 p.m.You have to love Harry Reid. He is the best friend the Republicans have. If he goes forward with this unconstitutional idea, it will fail in the Senate, Joe L will become a Republican and the Republicans will become the majority party. Go Harry!

Feb. 23, 2007, 3:51 p.m.Have ANY of you ever read the Constitution of the United States?
Under the Constitution, what the congress is attempting to do is illegal. As a nation we have forgotten one thing that used to be true and that is politics STOPS at the border. To run any other way is geopolitical insanity not to mention suicidal

Feb. 23, 2007, 4:05 p.m.This is actually another corrupt monopoly party's deceptive legislation as provisions therein will keep US troops in Iraq PERMANENTLY on the flimsiest of justifications.

Feb. 23, 2007, 4:15 p.m.Whenever Congress tries to micro-manage ANYTHING they only make it worse. To think that they will do any better with this legislation is wishful thinking at best and, from the perspective of those in the line of fire over in Iraq, downright laughable if it weren't so frightening.
Say what you like about President Bush's handling of the war, but if you think things are bad now, wait until the knuckleheads in the Senate and House get their hands on the wheel.
