Wendy's International Inc. said Friday that sagging sales will force it to close the restaurant where the nation's third-largest hamburger chain began in 1969. The iconic restaurant, filled with memorabilia and photographs of the late Wendy's founder, Dave Thomas, will close March 2.

Wendy's was based on a burger place in downtown Findlay, Ohio, which was still there in 1994. It was exactly the same, square burgers, named after a girl, similar decor, etc. etc.

I know a company has to think about profits, but closing the original location is not what Dave Thomas would do. I think the reason he left it open was to remind everyone in the company of how it all started. There is symbolic value in leaving it open regardless of whether that one store does not turn a profit. That one location does not need to carry itself. This is what hapens when executives with not ties to the infancy of a company get full control. What a shame.

Why don't they make that place a historical monument? It's basically a part of Americana!

The last time I drove up I-95, I noticed that the Hardee's at Hardeeville, SC had closed. But these companies are no longer run by the people who founded them, so it's unrealistic to expect the new bosses to have any sentimental attachment to their company's roots.

Besides, these original chain stores never had the best burgers. Reaching back 50 years, the best burger I remember came from a joint in Waycross, GA, right in the curve of the highway by the railroad tracks. I wish I could remember the place's name. But Henry's in Tallahassee also made a superior burger, and so did Mutt and Jeff. I guess those places are all gone now, in an age where people seek instant gratification.

This is the death punch for Wendys.

Once they close this place down they will go bankrupt.

When a business owner leaves or dies....more times than not, the successors will destroy the company. Look at WalMart, Chrysler, now Wendy's.
