Soldiers...trapped between conscience and duty. Another casualty of war....and another...and another. The madness of politics and war and religion and race and gender. The killing of innocents to achieve ends that are not justified. Sometimes I wonder....

as a historian, i have noted the repeated futility of war. for every bad situation we correct, we create many more. i've often wondered why we humans continue to participate in warfare, and i've come to the conclusion that too many people love it (mostly people who don't actually fight)...and cynical politicians find it easy to manipulate young men pumped full of testosterone.

perhaps we are hardwired to warfare, like we are hardwired for sex, drugs & rock & roll.

Lieutenant Ehren Watada has laid out the blueprint. The Iraq War is illegal per US law. Ordering someone to go there is thus an illegal order. The military court that was set to try him did every dirty trick it could think of to prevent him from mounting that defense, but in end the Judge painted himself into a corner with no door, and had to declare a mistrial with prejudice.

No Commander in Chief in the history of this nation has ever lost the support of the military. With news that a number of Generals and Admirals will resign if Bush orders an attack on Iran, Bush is set to go down in history as a first on this front.

The fact that Bush can still be dreaming of ways to ensure his legacy among the greats like George Washington serves only to showcase the depth of his megalomania.
