Cave-ins and sinkholes have swallowed up homes and children. The creek runs a ghastly orange with acidic mine water. And the air and soil are polluted with lead dust.

Thousands have moved out because of the dangers. In a couple of years, only a few residents could be left in a city that peaked at about 20,000 around World War II. Already, Picher is getting down to a hard core of holdouts.

There are thousands of towns like this across America. Industry had used and abused then moved on.....

Unless it is seen this way with all the lead dust and orange, you would have no clue that your living in a Super Fund Site~!

Industry counts on the AMerican People to be ignorant of pollution and keep on living in the areas.

Excellent post by stoner. What is a crying shame is that this post gets so little attention because in this case the current administration is doing something about a problem created circa 1940 - 1970. You would of had 300 comments by now if this could have been turned into a partisan issue.

More has to be done in this area. Our citizens should not be forced to live in toxic waste dumps or down stream for that matter. We need to do more to educate and stop waste from farming operations.

The billions of dollars being suggested to be spent on global warming which MIGHT be a problem generations down the road needs to be spent on these issues that are effecting the lives of our fellow citizens NOW!

By the way, I solved the sink hole problem in my back yard. Years ago I got tired of dumping tons of dirt into the hole. I now have a nice koi pond.

I wonder if ol'Hoppy there can fix lead poisoning. "theres nothing that can't be fixed." Please, my god man. I'll bet ol' Hoppy there thinks a nuclear blast could be fixed. One of the first things W. did after getting elected was to cut funding to the Superfund, a massive toxic waste clean-up effort.
