Haggard is also getting attention for a song he's not even released -- "Hillary," an ode to presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in which he declares, that "This country needs to be honest/This country needs to be large/Something like a big switch of gender/Let's put a woman in charge."

Merle better be careful, the freepers ain't gonna like this. It's gonna be tough to "Dixie Chick" him though, he is a little to big for them to successfully boycott. Oh wait they couldn't even take the Dixie Chicks down. They tried but they couldn't do it.

Merle's fan base has to be mostly over 40 years of age. This will divide some of that base down party lines. The really hardcore will either glorify Merle beyond their previous level of adoration or they will suddenly hate him and throw away their Merle collections, including Mama Tried and Workin' Man Blues. This will create some new, younger fans for him and capitalize on the Dixie Chick's connection. I liked him before, especially for Pancho and Lefty, and I like him just as much now, especially for Pancho and Lefty.

It seems to me that Merle Haggard has so much respect and being a legend that people just dont get mad at him--Im one of those. Merle has earned that respect. When Merle speaks people listen. Right on to the greatest country singer in history.Merle has always been right about the system and politics. If Merle says Hillary is the person then thats good enough for me.Hillary and Obama would be a dream ticket. It would be a landslide. Thanks Merle for your great song writing talent.

Merle has some gret music but he is pretty much a brain dead alcoholic. Its really very sad. He sent a friend of mine to get him a 12 pac when he was in a recording studio a couple of years ago. He hasnt gotten the fact that Hill backs the war in Iraq. He should have said lets put a black man in charge

I'd bet you liberals didn't like Merle before he wrote the Hill song. And I bet you didn't think he was the best all time country music singer either. Hell, We all know you don't like redneck music.

Well JakeRather, I hate to disappoint you but you are dead wrong. Being a country fan does not make you a conservative. As a matter of fact I can tell you that the country music establishment was not endorsing the GOP garbage until the Bushes decided to Cash in on it a few years ago and claimed to be fans. I have been a REAL fan of country including Haggard for decades. Any real fan of the man and of country knows that there is a tradition against political corruption but the media and corp controled radio has altered it. I play in a band and have sung Haggard songs. I know his music by heart. The real disgrace is that many new commers to Country forget that it was never the Bush prentenders that country fans revered-- It was Jimmy Carter. Hell Willie Nelson smoke a joint on the roof of the WH with his brother. Unlike the Bushes who go for photo ops, Carter really has ties us. There are several libs who love country but are still smart enough to see through the BS.
