STONERS
March 3, 2007, midnightThe painting, Rockwell's "Russian Schoolroom," was snatched during a late-night burglary at a gallery in Clayton, Mo., on June 25, 1973. The Oscar-winning filmmaker purchased the painting in 1989 from a legitimate dealer and didn't know it was stolen until last week, the FBI said in a statement.

March 3, 2007, 12:59 p.m.Well now, the haiku words here are "legitimate dealer".
This is not the same as the lucky guy who reportedly--and unknowingly--purchased that diminuative, 110-million-dollar Degas sculpture from an equally clueless garage-sale spieler (sic). No, the dealer who abandoned this painting for his thirty pieces of silver back in '89 most probably knew exactly what he had, if not its source, and precisely why he sold it to this particular buyer. To deny any culpability would be in both their best financial interests and also keep them free as birds. Don't despair, though--nobody's going to the hoosegow over this one; they just got caught.
So, I guess the question for our hapless former Phoenix resident is this: "Hey, Steve, ol' boy, who ratted you out?"

March 3, 2007, 12:55 p.m.People, people, that was not ORIGINAL Rockwell's work. In China (still behind West in modern art) every good artist is making living by painting from original... it looks JUST AS AN ORIGINAL and "poor" Spielberg purchased as an "original".
How I know that. My God, I had painted many, many reproductions of old masters, before I changed my style... You can read it and see it in my profile...

March 3, 2007, 1:29 p.m.They sure do keep leaving out the "Legitimate Dealer's" name in each "news" item I see about this painting.
Anyone know how a "Statute of Limitations" might work on a deal like this?

Don't legit sellers verify that they're not selling stolen works? ummmmm, yea! A legit seller watches his/her own toosh!
So you know where I'm going with this.....

March 3, 2007, 9:41 p.m.How did Spielberg wind up with it? Why it took so long to identify it?
Looks like somebody was asleep at the wheel.

March 4, 2007, 12:08 a.m.It is called receiving or dealing in stolen goods and it is a criminal offense that a common citizen would spend time behind bars for. Oh, but Spielberg's rich, Hollywood elite and will be allowed to get out of it free. Besides, he knows the governor and a lot of powerful politicians who can make it all go away.
A perfect example of corruption in government?
