March 4, 2007, 8:37 a.m.This is a difficult issue. I would hope that the farmers can find the laborers to harvest their crops. I think it's actually a good idea to have low risk prisoners doing some of the work. Get's them out in the fresh air and has to be better than watching TV all day in a cement box. And what about teenagers out of school for the summer?
As for the illegal workers, I applaud the move to discourage them from crossing the border. It is long past time when the border should be secure. If workers are really needed, there should be a system where they can come across the border and then leave when the work is done. But to stay and use our social services is just plain wrong. The bill for those services should be sent straight to the Mexican government.
