March 5, 2007, 1:16 a.m."Our finding that increased body fatness is associated with the earlier onset of puberty provides additional evidence that growing rates of obesity among children in this country may be contributing to the trend of early maturation in girls," said Dr. Joyce Lee, the lead author.

STONERS
March 5, 2007, 1:16 a.m."Previous studies had found that girls who have earlier puberty tend to have higher body mass index, but it was unclear whether puberty led to the weight gain or weight gain led to the earlier onset of puberty," she added.
"Our study offers evidence that it is the latter," Lee said.

March 5, 2007, 10:45 a.m.There is alot more to puberty than just getting breasts. Shifts in hormones, behaviors, and attitudes are significantly more indicative of the growth termed "puberty".
If puberty is defined only as breast development than a huge number of boys are reaching puberty earlier as well. "Man (or boy) boobs" develop in the overweigt males.
Breasts are primarily fat cells surrounding ducts and glands. Saying overweight persons have larger breasts is virtually the same as saying they have larger arms, legs, or arses.

March 5, 2007, 11:07 a.m.On the flip side, nutritionally-deprived kids have delayed puberty.

March 5, 2007, 11:25 a.m.In women, puberty is a way of saying that we are able to have children now. If your fat, your body is able to support it and you will have the nutrients to feed it... If you don't have the fat, then it will come later...
C'mon a 15 year old girl can say this and a scientist can't figure it out?

March 5, 2007, 12:03 p.m.The magic number is 105 (if I recall correctly). A girl must reach this rate for puberty to start. If she hits the magic number at 9 then she get puberty early. Isn't that big a mystery. They did an earlier study to find that number when they noticed African American girls were hitting puberty faster than white girls. The big difference was the african american girls weighed more because of their diet and therefore hit that magic number.
Guess what it also explain why you get a 17 year old olympic gymnast that's never had a period... Its all in the weight.

March 5, 2007, 3:17 p.m.I'm not health food expert but I think a lot of it has to do with what people are eating and feeding their kids. Although the food has started to improve a lot of places are still using hormones in growing livestock and even some plants.. when these products are injested they also affect whoever eats them. I have a young cousin who isn't even in double digits yet and she looks like an adult in a child's body.. and she consumes a lot of products that are known to use growth hormones. It more of just a guess on my part but if the hormones work on the animals and plants it will work on humans too. There are just some things that I believe mankind shouldn't fiddle with; keep in mind all of this is opinion. ^_^

March 5, 2007, 3:40 p.m."...for reasons that are unclear..." I don't understand. This is not new information in any way. Fat cells produce the hormone leptin, which in turn triggers the onset of puberty and all of its physiological changes. That is why very thin girls, like ballerinas, are so slow to develop. It only follows logically that children, especially girls, with excess fat cells will undergo puberty sooner. How is this study making headlines?
