A powerful earthquake off Indonesia's Sumatra island damaged buildings and sent panicked residents running into the streets, officials and witnesses said. It was felt as far away as Singapore and Malaysia. The USGS said the tremor, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, struck around 30 miles from Padang, a city on Sumatra's western coast. It

No injuries reported (so far), and since the quake was on land, no tsunami warning necessary.

Scientist need to come up with a seismograph that will predict (with accuracy) an earthquake at least a day before it happens. Because earthquakes don't kill people, buildings and large structures do. People will stay in a safer building when the earthquake strikes. Or on higher ground in case of a tsunami. It might not save all but it might reduce the number of deaths.

Death toll 70 and expected to rise further. Collapsed buildings do indeed cause most fatalities in an earthquake, but accurate prediction remains a very inexact science. A more practical course of action is strengthening buildings against earthquakes and/or retrofitting existing sructures.

In the case of sub-marine earthquakes, tsunami warning systems are increasingly useful and future death tolls should be reduced.

I'm sure the US will rush aid and supplies to them, even though we are the Great Satan and the world hates us. They will still take our money......

For anyone who hasn't already tried this, and you have downloaded Google Earth. Seclect the Geographic Features in the layers column, then look at Indonesia. It's amazing how active that area is in terms of plate techtonics. With all of the volcanoes, earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis, it has got to be a scary place to live. I grew up in California, which sits at the edge of a subduction zone. If you look at Indonesia, however, its almost completely surrounded by plate activity.

Mother Nature is boss. And there are none who can deny it. She turns in her sleep and people die. She fans herself and tornados strike. We are her servants.

Technology has yet to discover the means to accurately predict earthquakes. Until then, our only recourse is to build well and hope for the best.

Man this region is just constantly having problems it seems. I hope people get the picture and start setting more strict building codes and moving back from the ocean a little.
