VIDEO: Cafferty on the Walter Reed scandal: "A National Disgrace!" »

Another glaring example of the Bush administration's lack of ability to deal with the consequences of its actions. Four years after invading Iraq, we're finding out that many of our returning wounded soldiers are being treated like garbage. The former commander of Walter Reed Medical Center, this Lieutenant General Kevin Kiley - he's now the surgeo

    And the Repubs have the nerve to say that they "support" and "care" for our soldiers"! Ha! If they really cared about them this wouldn't be happening to those brave men and women that have sacrificed limbs, body parts to obey the most incompetent Commander in Chief in our history. A "new Katrina" is an eloquent way to describe this latest in a consistent string of mshaps, lies, death, misery and agony that the NeoCon fantasy have brought to America. Where are those military in this blog to defend what this "president has done with our military brothers and sisters? No matter what party you belong to, this is indefensible, reprehensible and should be outraged. How can anyone stand unwavering along this administration and not question this lack of humanity and supervision?

      Your'e right once again David! Congress needs to adjust Bush's projected budget. I'm sure he MEANT to increase veteran funding. It must be a typo that he is DECREASING funding.

      G-D D-MNIT CONGRESS! Why can't you write the president's budget's for him!? This president would be the great leader he was born to be if Congress would just stop ALLOWING him to do such an awful job!

      I HATE those guys!

          "Here's the question - who is ultimately responsible for the conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center?" Harry Truman was a president who actually had some guts. He said "The buck stops here."

          In the Bush administration, the buck stops at the lowest level sacrificial lamb they can identify. No one who is really accountable is EVER held accountable. That's because if Truman's "The buck stops here" maxim were still in place, then here goes the list:

          * Osama escapes

          * Mullah Omar escapes

          * Iraq emboldens terrorists, strengthens Iran and breaks the back of the US military for no good purpose.

          * Katirna response

          * Duabi Ports deal is great for American security

          * Shoddy care of returning veterans.

          Like it or not, the buck stops with GW Bush, because Harry "Give 'em Hell" Truman was right.

            "Why don't we hear about the money problems facing the military and VA healthcare systems? Newspaper, TV and radio editors know there is one word that is guaranteed to cost them their readers, viewers or listeners: Budget! So, who would read or view or listen? More importantly, who would care? In the slang of the press, budget stories aren't "sexy" and don't "have legs" and don't "bleed." "

              Here's the other large problem, every time something of this nature pops up the first thing everybody wants to do is throw more money at it. Friends, neighbors, WE ARE OUT OF MONEY!!!! These ongoing wars have sucked us dry. We had better address this problem before we go the way of the Soviet Union. (don't think it can't happen)

              Yes I want to do everything we can for our soldiers.

                Well, here go the uninformed Bush bashers again. If you understood the process, you might understand the real problem. W has to advance a budget that he can sell to Congress and the nation. The military is told in no uncertain terms that they MUST "support the President's budget". To complain about funding is non-support. And the military are specifically prohibited from lobbying -- asking Congress, or lobbyists, for extra money. For a military already under-funded for its missions, support and training, as it has been since Reagan, medical care is one priority, among many, that are critical -- one priority, not the only priority. So, if the military recognizes that it now has substandard anything (housing, hospitals, facilities), it must shift money from one priority to another -- something that is hard to do in a war. This has much more to do with the Walter Reed crisis than Kevin Kiley or anyone else in uniform.

                  I too am a fan of Harry Truman, for exactly the reason stated above -- "the buck stops here". And that's all he made as President. But he lived in a different time. There was reasonable unity among the American people -- the greatest generation. There wasn't the whining about everything the President said. There wasn't a voracious news presence in every home 24/7, vying for salacious tidbit stories. No, there was a generation of Americans trying to DO what was right. Now, however, there are competing opinions, political agendas, power struggles, etc. -- a lot of "it's all about me" kind of nonsense. Sure there is nationally-oriented rhetoric, but it is often slanted for personal or political gain -- not the good of the country. Harry Truman, as good a person, and as good a real leader as he was, didn't have those detractors. And Truman also had Generals Marshall, Eisenhower and MacArthur, real can-do leaders, who could really help.

                    I just heard a caller to an NPR talk show say that the Bush administration has been working a deal to privatize Walter Reed and give it to Halliburton...is this true?

                    I've been accusing Bush of incompetence. If this is true, I will revise my beliefs and conclude that Bush and Cheney are intentionally screwing up government and raping it to give lucrative deals to their cronies. If this bit about privatizing Walter Reed is true then we don't have an incompetent President we may have a crooked President.

                    If you know anything about this deal to give Walter Reed to Halliburton let us know.

                      The problems with the VA have been going on for years - they predate Clinton! This should not be a partisan issue

                      Walter Reed is slated to close by 2011 and be combined with the National Naval Medical Center in a new hospital to be built in Bethesda - recommendation of the Base Closure Commission. After all Walter Reed was opened in 1909! How many of us go to hospitals that were built in 1909?

                      What I'm more concerned about - efforts by some in Congress to keep it open.

                      Our wounded veterans need care in world class facility. We all need to put pressure on Congress to follow through and close this outdated facility

                                What I want to know is why the news media, who has done so many clips on vets over the last umpteen years, has never brought up the fact that the facility is so run down? Over the last ten to fifteen years, at least, I have seen the same clip from Walter Reed in a physical therapy area.

                                It certainly didn't get this run down in the last few years. This has, no doubt, been a steady decline over several presidencies. It is NOT a partisan problem nor should one party or the other be blamed. It is a bearucratic problem, just like any government entity. Give anything to the government, regardless of who is in power, and you end up with a nightmare.

                                    VA Hospitals have been in a sorry state for years. At this point, it goes well beyond the Democrat/Republican polarization existing in the country today. This is slap in the face to every American. The reality that we are taking poor care of our Veterans is appaling and inexcusable. Forget about holding out any hope that the politicians will step in a take corrective measures. They are in office to further their careers, make as much money as they can, protect the investments of their special interest groups, push for better health care and retirement benefits for themselves, secure pork projects, vote down term limits, etc. Did you think they were in office to represent the voters? Democrats - Republicans, it doesn't matter. They are equally corrupt but they do a heck of a job making out for themselves.
