March 8, 2007, 6:37 p.m.I am sure there are many wonderful things in Spain but the lack of religion is probably not the reason for it. What distresses me is the lack of guts many Spaniards showed when they caved in to the terrorists after the train was bombed. They have reneged on a very important responsibility.
They have short memories. They were ruled over by the Muslim Moors for centuries and have given in to Muslim terrorism.

March 8, 2007, 9:12 p.m.They have also forgotten all the people Franco killed. Prosperity flanks ideology.

March 8, 2007, 11:06 p.m.What happens to a country that gives up religion? Look at America right now! Freedoms are taken away piece by piece, no morals, bad is good and good is bad, proverts run the show and good people are told to shut up. Earth Quakes, Storms, Floods, Fires, Sickness and the list goes on and on each day brings more sorrow. The government is god but can't help soon enough because they don't care and from what I have seen a lot of people DON'T CARE.

March 9, 2007, 1:31 a.m.The exact figures escape me, but there was a poll a friend of mine showed me that illustrated how a vast majority of prisoners [I think almost 90%] are religious. Whereas the very small opposite percentage are non-believers.
I'm not sure what that data explains....but it sure explains that religion is not making people "more" moral.
One of my dad's co-workers a few years ago actually justified stealing beacuse she said she can be forgiven every Sunday, and do it again.
Hmmm, yes...religion.

March 9, 2007, 4:04 p.m.Can't say your language is appropriate, but I do have to say that it is ridiculous to claim that "most of the perverts are preachers and youth ministers" - that is patently false. Given the relative 'newsworthiness' of a minister or youth counselor who preys on youth, it may appear that there is a greater proportion of 'perverts' in those vocations than others, but I seriously doubt that there are any statistis that prove that appearance.
Still, I'm not sure I understand your argument that "[t]his is the kind of filth that homo's preach in their attempt to subvert the youth of this country" - how does making such a claim advance the interests of the - ahem - "homos" (as you put it)?

March 9, 2007, 12:51 p.m.not sure who the wise man was, but Jim Palmer did write a book called "Divine Nobodies: Shedding Religion to Find God", may be where it came from

March 9, 2007, 6:49 a.m.Religion is just a crutch for the weak-minded. Notice how easily it's exploited by those in power to control the minds of others through fear and superstition. Inquisition anyone?

March 9, 2007, 7:51 a.m.I was absolutely stunned when I read this author's conclusion! He had just finished listing all the human vices which had become acceptable in Spain once the country became secularized, things which are for the mostpart harmful to human families, and then he concluded that this was a good thing!
So the solution to crime is really quite simple after all. All you have to do is "define deviancy down" (to borrow Pat Moynihan's phrase).
Maybe I need to go back and read this article again. He couldn't possibly have drawn this conclusion....

March 9, 2007, 7:51 a.m.Canada- Fisrt The US is not the most religious country in the world. Asia for example is also very religious. Maybe not in the same belief but religious. Georgia a Republic of the former Soviet Union has more churches per square mile than any country in the world. These are two exaples.
Sage- Great comment "People are leaving religion all the time and finding God" I think a major problem in the US is that non-christians need to define what they are fighting against. Are they mad at Christians and God or at organized religion? There is a difference. I believe when we define that difference the dialog between true christians and non believers will be able to tone down to a peaceful one between the two. May God Bless

March 9, 2007, 8:26 a.m.Well all those things happen here in America but religion isn't dead. People are just enjoying freedom. Of course the Spanish are stupid wimps for giving into terrorists but at least they are living. Cool!

March 9, 2007, 9:20 a.m.So, use Fraco's Spain to compare to modern?
And the conlclusion is that nothing happens, when the actual evidence presented is that alot of things were chagned. Youc an agre eor disagree with the changes, but to say nothing happens is moronic.
The conclusion is that since things are as he wants it is all good. When you decide nothing is against morality, it is easy to be "moral".

March 9, 2007, 9:24 a.m.let's get something out there right now though. Spain has less guns than we do. so violent crime WILL be lower. They dont need as many police since not many people are liable to go into a shopping mall or school with an Armalite gas powered semi-automatic weapon pumping round after round into whoever is in front of them. Saying because they gave up God(s) makes them less violent is really, really stupid. I have said this many on top of many times. If you really are a liberal then you should love Religion. Religion in its purest (before modern churches and etc messed it up) form promotes benign behavior for humans. Example: who is a bigger liberal than Jesus Christ? be good to your neighbor, dont steal, dont hurt anyone, give to the poor. if you think this sort of message is dumb and not needed you are a scary person.

March 9, 2007, 10 a.m.Another thing I want to ask is What accomplishments has Spain pulled off since the age of discovery really? They have no space program or anything. Oh health care? they are socialist, they SHOULD have it. Seriously what accomplishments can you point at and say "I want America to emulate that!"?

March 9, 2007, 10:02 a.m.I have been reading comments on Netscape for the last year and only recently adding my own, I've come to one conclusion and it is a sad one for most Americans. As a country you are the most selfish, egotistical, narrow minded country in the world. I know i will get burned on this but it has to be said. I have many relatives who live in the US and have met lots of tourists who vacation here and i find them quite pleasant. Compassion and compromise are two things that a modern civilization must have and are sadly in short commodity in your country, I find this ironic as it is something that most churches preach on every Sunday here. It leaves me only one conclusion that your churches must be very corrupt and caviler in it's teachings. What is to be gained by keeping such institutions if they only keep your society from a peaceful coexistence even within your own country not to mention with the rest of the world.

March 9, 2007, 10:52 a.m.I am so glad the author moved to Spain--They deserve each other--Spain is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there--Their medical sysytem is a mess (just ask anyone there) because it is socialized. Their "spineless" government gives in at the first sign of trouble.
Just you wait-- Spain is becoming a haven for the muslim and then watch how religion takes over and all those lawless attitudes become ancient history--The Moors shall rise again!!
Giving in and taking the spirituality out of a country will proclaim its doom--Let's not let that happen here!!

March 9, 2007, 11:26 a.m."its funny how some religious types are so venomous."
And the secularists/atheists here are so vituous! ;-)
Going through the typical thread here at Nutscape is like getting caught in a grade school food fight

Hospital stays are covered as well as any procedure as long as its medical, not elective.

March 9, 2007, 11:48 a.m.Let the United States follow along humbly the path of Spain.
"Spain proves that societies do not fall apart when they give up religion..."
Think of the Billions of dollars spent in the United States for brainwashing religion into each new generation that could be spent on shelter, clothing and food for the poor.

March 9, 2007, 11:59 a.m.The article only mentions Spain, but many countires in Europe are similar. Scandanavian counries for the most part are even more "godless." In one, they did a survey, and only 10 percent believed in god. It's quite interesting how a continent seems to be abandoning the idea of god. As an Athiest, I truly believe this is a good thing for the world aand humanity.
