March 11, 2007, 4:10 p.m.For some people they just don't know what to do with themselves in retirement. I work part time at a golf course so I can play all the golf I want to. I work out 3 times a week, read, play with my grandson and just thoroughly enjoy retirement. I can safely say I have never been happier.

March 11, 2007, 5:29 p.m.Retirement is what you make it. After ownership of countless homes I finally came to the realization that, "What am I doing"? The banker is elated, I'm making my monthly contribution for owning a home and the ensuing Morgage. Is this life, the perpetual mowing, remodeling, property taxes and keeping up with the Jones attitude. There has got to be more to life than this!! Retirement can be exhilarating if you can afford it.
There is not a reason to "Need a job", to make yourself feel fullfilled, well unless you did not safe. There are hobbies, travel and other endeavors such as helping the needy to make your life more rewarding. I will not be enslaved to a morgage and servitude to appease the elite within America. I choose my own life on my own terms. That is the meaning of life.

March 12, 2007, 1:06 a.m.Good observations NelsonR.
After he retired, my old Dad used to say that he was so busy he didn't know how he'd ever found the time to go to work! And he remained occupied on one thing or another (travelling or lending someone a helping hand, mostly)till the end of his days. It seems a pretty good model, which I plan to emulate.
The idea of retiring, and sitting back taking it easy may seem OK at first, but energy's a funny thing -- you use it or lose it.

nostalgia
March 12, 2007, 7:40 a.m.Several months ago, my husband brought home an article from a business journal for me to read. They estimated that 50% of baby boomers will not be able to stay in their current homes once they retire.
With their retirement income they will not be able to pay the mortgage and maintain their current life style.
My husband and I are boomers. We can look at our friends and almost tell which ones are going to be in for a very rude awakening
