From the rhetoric, you'd think that the president has finally recognized that poverty and inequality are the central issues in Latin America; that it is not free trade that we should be concerned about, nor Hugo Chavez, nor coca eradication, but rather the poverty that has persisted through more than a decade of "Washington Consensus" eco

This is the reality of US policy in Latin America and it stinks like hypocrisy south of the Rio Grande. They have heard the same promises over and over.

The article says: {These economic policies, promoted by successive U.S. administrations, and by the World Bank and other lending institutions, focused on expanding markets, reducing the role of the state in the economy, encouraging exports, and opening Latin American economies to U.S. imports. Unfortunately, these policies have had almost no impact on poverty or the unequal distribution of wealth.} That is the problem in nutshell, the main worry in these countries is poverty and free market policies that favor the US unilaterally do NOT work in Latin America. That's why Chavez' rhetoric has caught on and spread like fire.

        South of the Rio Bravo:

Mr Bush's speech had a repeated world "COMPASSION".

Bush manifested his compassion or the compassion of "America" more than 15 times down in South America, while cooperation trade and integration were underplayed.

No one almost anywhere is asking for compassion, moreover sometimes flat, plain compassion is very insulting.

It is possible the presidential speech writers for this trip are not aware of the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the surroundings.

The worst is, the president probably was not aware of anything he read.

God bless America, but specially protects America until we elect a better government.

We've been screwing these people around ever since we've been a viable country. The goodwill of the citizens means little when all they have seen is our very worst behavior: slave labor, taking all profits out of country, treating the natives like scum.

Yeah, it's easy to SAY we care...but starting with the spanish conquistidores, they have had the hardest evidence how the powerful REALLY think of them.

We have been supporting corrupt governments and screwing these people over for years and we wonder why they don't like us?
