When was Amerika united? Someone please refresh my memory. If Amerika was so united, then why was there a need for the civll rights movement? Why is there a debate over a minority president? Why is there an uneven justice system and so on?

Is diversity eroding the country's foundation?

Yes, I agree a lot with what clkbeus has stated. Once upon a time we didn't have all these problems.

I am using this as an example: We never celebrated Cinco de Mayo, the Independence day of Mexico. But now it has become a big celebration excuse for drinking day here in Florida. Does Mexico celebrate the 4th of July with that much gusto??

Also neighborhoods that were once made up of Americans are being taken over by immigrants that won't learn our language, our voting ballots are in 2 languages, have made signage and packaging instructions broke down into 4 languages. If I went to Mexico, I need to speak spanish and read spanish,If I go to France I need to know some french and read it, etc.

America's culture has been watered down because we are the land of the free and full of opportunity, we just don't force people to live the American life style and are losing because of this.

I don't think the hyphen is the problem. I think the problem is ballots and government forms printed in anything but English. In California they print ballots in Vietnamese as well as Spanish and English. Part of becoming a citizen used to be that you had to pass an English test. Aren't citizens the only people who are supposed to vote? So why print ballots in anything else?

Re: Is diversity eroding the country's foundation?

No, diversity is not eroding the country's foundation.

What is eroding our fundation is a seeming generalized refusal to embrace our fundamental constitutional principles. We can celebrate our diversity within the context of acknowledging our differences regarding race, religion, national origin and politics, etc.

Our freedom is best enjoyed by a good measure of enlightened tolerance. Our problems have their roots in our violating our 'social contract' (The Constitution). Too often we use our freedom to ridicule and attempt to suppress the lawful voices and lawful activities of many who join us in our democracy.

As a result we have a perpetual bar-room brawl disguised as 'freedom of speech'.

The author of the blog is from Maine. That tells me everything right then and there. He needs to come off the boat or get out of the woods.

Also we are so afraid of being called "intolerant" that we will tolerate anything right up to our own extinction. There are some lines that must be drawn. Speaking English is one of them. Being a legal immigrant or having legal permission to work/study here is another line.

I don't support supressing other languages, but if they live here they should learn English, use English in their businesses so everyone can trade with them. It should be required by law that all signs, menus, labels, etc. should be in English. If anyone wants to add another language they could, but it should not be required to add other languages to anything.
