WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates cautioned on Thursday the Army would face problems without emergency funds but insisted U.S. forces could fight a third war despite being stretched in Iraq and Afghanistan. sure. gates could start a dozen more wars, but who would support them, who would fight them, who would pay for them, and who would be charged with war crimes for them?

their have been many stories in the past few months about the deterioration of every national guard unit, of most every army brigade, morale levels, and reduced reenlistments. cheney/rumsfeld have effectively destroyed the army, but gates has his job to think about. therefore he must say we are ready.

    hogwash.

This is getting freaky. I sure hope the Generals don't have to stage a coup and take Bush to Gitmo at gunpoint.

That would look really, really bad.

What? Are you concerned about Americas REPUTATION??? That went down the toilet in 2000.

While I recognize that the US "MUST" project strength and readiness, the rhetoric and actions of this administration is pointing towards military involvement in additional countries, all in the sacred name of Homeland Security.

While the Homeland Security Department is charged with our security against externally originated violence occuring within our borders, it seems it is forgetting that homeland security goes beyond the threat of deadly violence.

Homeland Security also means freedom from big brother intrusion, freedom from crime, realistic access to health care, the ability to find work at reasonable wages, freedom from random property seizure, the ability to send children to competent schools, etc, etc, etc....

If we dont include the above, in reasonbable quantities, is then this exercise overseas really worth the price?

We may be free from external violence, but broke, no jobs, no health care, no schools, and in debt for many years to come....

I guess that once again we refuse to learn from history where you can't sustain wars with too many fronts. This was Hitler's main mistake.
