March 23, 2007, 11:24 a.m.As we recall they had switched suppliers of wheat gluten, right? They put wheat gluten into dry food, too, though ...
A source close to the investigation tells ABC News that the rodenticide, which the source says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food.
The chemical is called aminopterin.
What investigators can't say so far is whether this is the only contaminant, if it is in all of the recalled food, or if it's in enough quantity in to sicken more animals.

March 23, 2007, 7:09 p.m.I was thinking the same thing. Why was the wheat gluten mixed with rat poison or why was there only rat poison on certain foods. Was the rat poison in the wheat gluten? Is that what they are saying? Which is why only the specified foods were listed.

March 23, 2007, 9:28 p.m.I saw on TV that Walmart was STILL stocking Ol' Roy dog food AFTER the recall! Not surprised, I used to work for that hideous company. I had reported a natural gas leak that the ignored (until some customers got sick from the fumes, 2 DAYS later!).
Those poor dogs and cats, and their poor owners, that is so sad!!

March 23, 2007, 9:43 p.m.What I want to know is why did they wait so long to tell the United States? When I first went to the MenuFoods.com website it had a link to the Shareholders alert, which stated that the information was for share holders only, and not for release to the United States- WHICH WAS DATED FEBRUARY???
WHY DID THEY NOT ALERT US SOONER? IF THEY WERE SO CONCERNED ABOUT THE WELL BEING OF OUR ANIMALS??
The alert was a warning to shareholders, to advise them about something that could have a possible adverse impact to their bottom line, and quarterly reporting!!
WHAT ABOUT OUR DOGS & CATS???? THEY ARE THE ONES THAT MADE THE SHAREHOLDERS & EXECUTIVES MONEY???
WHY IS THAT PRESS RELEASE GONE FROM THEIR WEBSITE NOW??
LETS GET REAL HERE!! ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS!!
BE HONEST!

March 23, 2007, 9:57 p.m.We need more horse meat, canning plants, there are a lot of un-wanted horses, that would make great low cost pet food.

March 23, 2007, 10:14 p.m.I was surprised that higher end pet foods are included in the recall.
I try not to give my dogs foods with wheat. But there is a lot of wheat in dog biscuits. Why are no biscuits on the list?
It seems like the costs of pet food has gone up before the recall.
Is this food not tested before it is released to the animals?
Bush promised Globalization would make things better. How would he feel if his house scotts were posioned by over the counter pet foods?
We need to bring back corporate accountibility.

March 23, 2007, 10:38 p.m.People need to check the recall list. Some brands not initially shown are now on the list. My dog has urine and blood tests tomorrow because of that.

March 23, 2007, 10:35 p.m."Knowing our public, they would probably like more regulation, and it may occur, but it hasn't happened with previous situations like this," McGill said. "There is a call for it, but will the public pay for it because it will make pet food more expensive."
yah how about we won't by your products at all if there isn't more regulation!!!! which should have been done in the first place.

March 23, 2007, 11:46 p.m.I can see where a new ingredient could cause problems. The issue I have now is that because of this, I am aware of how they make commercial dog food and that I can't believe I have been feeding it to my four legged family members. I bought the mid to high end food and looked for the most natural ingrdients, but I see now that I didn't look hard enough.

March 23, 2007, 11:53 p.m.Why are we importing wheat anyway???
I realize that this question alone opens up a pandora's box of issues, but maybe out of ignorance, what ever happened to the "bread basket"???

March 24, 2007, 2:26 a.m.Does the US make anything 100% HERE.....Don't those people eat cats and dogs over there???? I hope people try to buy close to home as much as possible for themselves and their families and pets. We need to foucus ON US here at home...other people don't have their best interests at heart for us. BUY local produce and support anything that is USA MADE for Gods sake and it'll bring us a little more of our pride for OUR country!!!Watch what you buy and where it comes from....ASK ABOUT IT.

March 24, 2007, 5:34 a.m.Nafta, Cafta, Globalization, It's entirely to blame.
Why import wheat? The same reason the global corps import (exploit) foreign labor...it's cheaper.

March 24, 2007, 6:05 a.m.Bush promised Globalization would make things better. How would he feel if his house scotts were posioned by over the counter pet foods!
Let his dog get sick @ die for sure He would take revenge again starting another war! This is just the beginning of the problems facing this idotic free trade !
FACT! No one has the slighest ideas what they have open use up to.
When it hits home perhaps then they will realize this idea was Insane.
In this case I only feed homemade food and treats! Why pay 4-5 bucks on a 12 oz bag of process treats! Whole chicken way less plus you know what your dogs are eatng.
whole chicken or roast cuts go in freezer bags I uses the frozen chicken/roast bits as treats!
Only BilJack Dog food my 2 shilo's !

March 24, 2007, 9:16 a.m.This is another example of how free trade has screwed Americans. These countries have used every excuse to block the United States from exporting food to their countries. Example beef. However, they think that they should be free to send food products to the United States that can kill or make sick not just out pets, but us humans. There needs to be better checking of food stuff coming into this country. The wheat gluten could have ended up in products intended for human consumption!

March 24, 2007, 9:53 a.m.People need to wake up and see what's in their pet's food. Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iam's, Purina all grind up dogs and cats from shelters and send to their horrific rendering plants. Look for the ingredient ethoxyquine on the label. It's euthanasia fluid! Do not feed your animals this food. Worse than rat poison!!!!!!!

March 24, 2007, 9:59 a.m.Why are they buying wheat from china? Should be buying it here in the states then not a problem DUH!

March 24, 2007, 10:34 a.m.The question on why we are buying wheat from China is a good one,the next question should be how much of this grain is going into our own consumption?Like our breads, and other things made with wheat. And the next question would be,is the rice that their sending use contaminated also?this conserns me.

March 24, 2007, 10:34 a.m.Here in Michigan (that has apples galore) the apple juice that is usually on sale for a dollar comes from... China. I put it right back on the shelf and get the American brand. I am so glad I did and this has been for the past several years. Some products have a stamp on it that says where the product comes from, you just have to look CAREFULLY and sometimes with a magnifying glass.

March 24, 2007, 10:41 a.m.The only problem is that if a US manufacure uses this wheat we won't know untill you get sick or a love one dyes.I hope that this is'nt the case but we can't take chances.Look what happened with the dog and cat food!!!

March 24, 2007, 12:38 p.m.A vet recommended today that no wet food be fed to animals until it's substantiated where this poison came from. For cats, he recommends a dry food with rice, for sensitive stomachs, if they're used to wet foods.
