U.S.: Defense Shield No Threat to Russia »

Russia has nothing to fear from a missile defense shield the United States wants to deploy in Eastern Europe because the rockets would be too light, too slow and too close to pose a threat, a U.S. envoy said Friday.

    Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Mark Pekala urged European leaders to get behind the plan to put 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic. He said the system would help protect the U.S. and its allies from the real menace: an Iranian airstrike.

    "We consider the threat from the Middle East very real and quite urgent," Pekala told reporters.

      In light of the article I posted about the potential of a European military forming and the fact that Germany is not in favor of this plan, the United States should focus its efforts on following Germany's strategy and focusing efforts on teaming up with Russia to build such a system. The Russians could help dissuade the Ukraine and Belarus from any problems they would have with the plan. The Polish and Czech governments might also be more inclined to support the plan if we had the backing of the Russians.

      However, in true GW style, he is likely to go it alone.
