"In previous work, Dr. Nathan A. Fox of the University of Maryland, College Park, and colleagues found that children carrying one or two short versions of a gene involved in transport of the neurotransmitter serotonin were more likely to be extremely shy at age 7 if their mothers reported little social support. If their mothers had plenty of social support, kids carrying the so-called "shy gene" were at no greater risk of shyness."

Now that is interesting regarding the necessary skills to being a parent affecting the "shy gene"

That is also interesting using the term "reguarding the necessay skills to being a parent". It does take time along with the skills to be a good parent.

I think they are referring to mothers that don't know how to nurture the "shy" kid, being "shy" themselves and not learning how to overcome that nature, they are not equipped to deal with the nature of a shy child. Fearful, shy and introvert often go hand and hand or are seen to, anyway.

I find it quite interesting that genes can affect this particular behavior.

"found that children carrying one or two short versions of a gene involved in transport of the neurotransmitter serotonin were more likely to be extremely shy at age 7 if their mothers reported little social support."

To me there sounds like a chemical imbalance as well with the serontonin.

What makes a child out going versus being shy? Is it lack of socializing or of the mothers socializing of the child?? Interesting finging thought.

I think it is relevant, an out going mother that socializes brings that experience to their child giving them the experience of being in social environments.

A mother that is secluded with little or no social interaction will have children that are secluded keeping them shy from social situations.
