It's a shame in this "modern world" things like this still happen. What parent would knowingly give birth to children who would face such hardship and probable death? Even if they survive the "seperation", who's to say what the quality of life will be. It's just so sad.

Who is paying for this? Their delivery was probablly costly too.

Doctors want this as a learning experience so they justify cost. Well they can learn on the uninsured also.

There are people who have no birth defects and live defectively. There is much better hope and medicine today then before. And for the cost there are organizations that pay for the cost to help those in need. That's how fortunate we are living in America.

With all of the talk of the deficit and such. You would think the USA does not have the funds to fly people from other countries and spend $500,000 on operations.

Oh I forgot, we do not count except to foot the bill for others.

for the people who have sat there and said "why would someone give birth to a child like that knowing that their lives will be harder" .. well, im a pregnant mother right now and i can answer that question. its not easy to have an abortion, im personally against them. you people have obvioulsy never been pregnant before, they probably couldn't tell that those girls were going to be joined. an ultra-sound picture is not always that clear, and it could've just seemed like the girls were close together. these girls mother probably loved them even more IF the parents were informed of birth defects. i felt a special connection with my baby when it was just a tiny little dot on the screen for my first ultra-sound. so what im trying to say is, before you go opening your mouths and making judgements, try and go through that situation yourself.

Personally, I wouldn't have gone through with this pregnancy either.

No, it's not easy to have an abortion depending on your beliefs. Is it easier to bring a miserable child into the world? Not only are they going to have harder lives, the chances of them having a normal life are slim to none. Are they going to have a regular slew of childhood friends like a normal kid? What about a boyfriend/girlfriend?

If I knew I was bringing a child into the world who would be missing out on life, I wouldn't subject them to it. That, in my mind, would be the right thing to do. If this showed up on my ultrasound, I would have weighed the quality of life against the abortion, and then I would have halted the pregnancy.

werdwun: you're completely right. i just thought it was pretty ignorant of some people to sit there and act like the parents knew 100%. everybody has their own opinion, and thats what we have to keep in mind. i hope the best for these two baby girls and their parents.
