A gay couple looking to rent a room say they were told by a local motel that it was against company policy to rent to gay couples.

They can't deny them a room for that reason. I think the motel could be in big trouble if the gay couple decide to sue.

Then again, Harbeas, this is South Carolina. Haven't they had enough upheaval with gay marriage in the past few weeks? Now they are in another gay scandal? I know it is a sweeping generalization and it is one hotel in one city in a small part of the state. However, it would seem discrimination is alive and well in South Carolina.

...I'M GLAD THE COUPLE ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH THEIR PLANS TO PRESS LEGAL ACTIONS AGAINST THIS MOTEL! I'LL BET THE RENTAL ESTABLISHMENT WILL THINK TWICE ABOUT DISCRIMINATING AGAINST GAY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME BASIC RIGHTS AS EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS COUNTRY!

We did a story on this as well. They don't want single same sex people sleeping in one bed. What if they were brothers, father and son, mother and daughter. Two best STRAIGHT girl friends? That is BS and we all know it. I like Redstates Idea, Sue and Boycott!

It's utter rubbish, of course. It should be illegal to discriminate on gorunds of sexual orientation or *perceived* orientation (covers straight girl friends in the same position)
A law preventing this has only just been passed in Britain... You may have heard about it, the Catholic Church kicked up a massive fuss and said they'd shut down all their adoption agencies if they weren't allowed to deny gay parents the right to adopt. Kind of sad that the minister who tends to gay rights, Ruth Kelly, is an ardent Catholic who fully supported the Church in this - she didn't get away with it though. Now there's a woman in denial (find a pic - that's dyke hair if ever I saw it!)

I am sick of hearing about stuff like this coming out of South Carolina. Everyone should boycott this state as a whole. If I travel and need food or gas, I will go the extra mile to reach the closest state beyond SC for my needs.
We the people need to accept and love...
Maybe the SCarolians should be brought to their knees. And, the best we can do is boycott with our $$$...spread the word!

I have never been to that state and now I am very glad that they have never received any of my spending money. They can rot in hell before I will step foot on their soil.

I actually agree. The smoker analogy is kind of dumb but it makes sense on a basic level.
It's not illegal to discriminate against gays in their state, so a lawsuit likely won't get the couple very far. About the best thing gays can do is boycott the place, which is well within their right.
But please, stop acting like a downtrodden minority that has to fight tooth and nail for its very existence. African Americans had it WAAAAAAYYYYY worse than you (Never heard of gays being bought and sold and slaughtered like animals). So please, get off your high horses.

By the way, as others have posted, boycott South Carolina. Don't even go through the state unless you have to. I don't understand why they hate America, but they do.

The actual problem here is that the film footage taken from the room cameras each day must be reviewed by the housekeeping staff. Oftentimes you find staffmembers who are shocked by what they see butt can't take their eyes offit. The management finds that the only way to get them back to work is to admit only Methodists, Mathematicians or the very aged.

They don't rent to two people of the same sex if there's only one bed... so if a mother and daughter or a father and son were in the same bed, that's bad but a father and daughter or a mother and son would be OK? Uh, yeah...

If the bed is a double or bigger...I guess it's their loss if they don't want to rent. their loss in many different ways.
We should all try to be just a little more tolerant of ignorant people, they need to be educated, if after you find they cannot be enlightened and educated, then boycott the establishment!!!! I'm sure there are homosexuals born and living in SC...poor souls!

If I owned a hotel or a motel I would deny you a room too. At the entrance of every hotel or motel just like a bar or any restuarnet it say : WE HAVE RIGHT TO RUFUSE SERVICE. It is there hotel not yours. If you do not like it quit sucking the flag pole or munching down on the carpet!
