Rising Sea Levels Threaten Cities »
Posted by: gatitabonitasen 2 years, 9 months agoMore than two-thirds of the world's large cities are in areas vulnerable to global warming and rising sea levels, and millions of people are at risk of being swamped by flooding and intense storms, according to a new study released Wednesday. In all, 634 million people live in the threatened coastal areas worldwide - defined as those lying at l

The 1841 sea level benchmark (centre) on the `Isle of the Dead', Tasmania. According to Antarctic explorer, Capt. Sir James Clark Ross, it marked mean sea level in 1841. Photo taken on 20 Jan 2004.
Mark is 50 cm across; tidal range is less than a metre.
The man responsible for putting the mark there, explorer Sir James Clark Ross stated explicitly and several times in his 1846 book that the mark was placed at Mean Sea Level. Other evidence surrounding the original placing of the benchmark is less clear, but we do have one positive measurement of where the benchmark stood relative to sea level taken in 1888 by the then Government meteorologist, Commander J. Shortt R.N. He found the mark to be 34cm above sea level - only 2½ cm different to its current position.

March 30, 2007, 9:53 a.m.Excellent point King. Yet that does not explain the RECEDING ocean waters in many areas. Take the New Jersey shore for example. A visit to Wildwood, or Cape May will reveal that since the late 1800's the ocean has receded some 250 yards, or a depth of approximately 2 feet. Some of this is obviously attributable to the tides bringing in sand from the ocean floor, however there is a noticeable drop in ocean depth. This makes for one of the widest beaches I have ever been on. I have a theory (I am a mechanic so don't take this too seriuosly) that due to the earth's rotation, and various deep sea geological events, the world's oceans "shift" in greater degrees than believed. An inevitable shifting "back" will gradually bring the ocean closer to past levels, and reduce the beachline. I made these comarisons visually using photographs of the beaches and piers taken during the late 1800's found in the various area museums.

March 30, 2007, 11:13 a.m.What should be a concern is the prospect of a new Ice age due to the large amount of fresh water entering the oceans with the melting of the ice pakes. Watering down the salt content disrupts criticle ocean currents between the south & north poles.

March 30, 2007, 1:03 p.m.This is wonderful news. That beachfront property I bought in Arizona will be worth something after all. I just have to wait til 2090 for this to might happen.

March 30, 2007, 1:53 p.m.Proof of Global Warming:
I got it!
40,000 years ago, our ancestors, the Neanderthal's were approximately 5'6" tall. The average man today is about 5'9" tall. Since we have evolved 3" closer to the sun, we have experienced global warming.
We're just closer to the sun people.

March 30, 2007, 2:08 p.m.I think it's dumb that so many people are so ignorant about the idea of a global warming. I mean if there's a chance of it we should at least do everything we can. I mean Al Gore isn't the only person who talks about it. You can even hear about it on the weather channel or any other science channel. If it wasn't real....real scientists wouldn't talk about it.
So it's still worth going to fightglobalwarming.com and quit being ignorant childish jackasses about it. I mean the ice caps really are melting, so gee guess there is a global warming. Just because you people keep telling yourselves there isn't a global warming just so u can continue poluting the world with no guilt doesn't mean there isn't a global warming.

March 30, 2007, 2:22 p.m.According to some of the scientists this has nothing to do with global warming, which is not any body's fault and it is natural.

Yeah, I mean, it's not like there are consequences and costs associated with "doing everything we can"....

But is there something inherent in the ice caps melting that shows us that it's a situation that's been created primarily by our emissions? That's the real issue and the real question being asked here, isn't it?

March 30, 2007, 3:06 p.m."It will without doubt have come to your Lordship's knowledge that a considerable change of climate, inexplicable at present to us, must have taken place in the Circumpolar Regions, by which the severity of the cold that has for centuries past enclosed the seas in the high northern latitudes in an impenetrable barrier of ice has been during the last two years, greatly abated.
(This) affords ample proof that new sources of warmth have been opened and give us leave to hope that the Arctic Seas may at this time be more accessible than they have been for centuries past, and that discoveries may now be made in them not only interesting to the advancement of science but also to the future intercourse of mankind and the commerce of distant nations."
President of the Royal Society, London, to the Admiralty, 20th November, 1817

March 30, 2007, 4:38 p.m.I'm curious as to what idiot wrote the headline on this article. It makes it sound as though the sea level were ACTUALLY rising and the the named cities were in imminent danger. All B.S. The actual article only lists cities that have ALWAYS been in danger from the possibility of a rising sea level and have ALWAYS be vulnerable to storms. Damn all sensationalist journalism! And if you would care to notice, the article is chock full of works like "could" and "may" and entirely devoid of "is" and "will." What a waste of time.

March 30, 2007, 5:09 p.m.I actualy believe in global warming but after watching Al Gore on his hit, An Inconvenient Truth I was almost ready to gag. Now don't get me wrong, the earth is affected by the interaction of humans and the pollution that ensues. But to make a promotional movie as himself as having the leadership role with flashbacks is quite appaulling. If he was truely sincere he would not have promoted himself or his childhood. Excuse me one second, I have to puke.
I am an advocate for the perpetuation of the human species but Al Gore is promoting himself and he won an Emmy for this specious movie of an egotistical power hungry human. Al build your huge home and leave the world to face the actual truth. Gosh I hate politicians and he epitomizes the political figure. I could care less about his life story but rather the facts behind the movie. Al corrupted a truism to promote his own agenda. Now I would never vote for this Donald Trump character, egotistical personalities.

March 30, 2007, 5:15 p.m.we all know that the carbs only make up a minute part of the atmos, and humans have a very small part in even that, so tell me again how we are causing this?

So you think the left is the arbiter of the truth and never skews things to fit their agenda? I'll just mention Dan Rather to nudge you to your conclusion and answer, Guy. As far as handing you crap, no thanks I'd not want to pick it up, you one the other hand can feel free to do so lol.

I am more worried about rising Gas prices than I am the Sea level .
Please 15 British Soldiers being captured makes the price of Gas rise 5 dollars a barrel .
SCAMS , SCAMS , scams .
I guess the people in Louisiana need not even go back it will be flooded from the Sea rising .

March 30, 2007, 6:51 p.m.humm! Sounds like another Al Gore brain storm. And if he is elected he promises to introduce legislature to add an additional $2,000.00 per year per family in new taxes to combat his fallacy. All you liberal lost souls, are you ready to come up with that kind of cash to support a Dummy that uses thirty times the electricity as the average family wi]ould use in three years? I'm not! Food on the table is more important. If enough sober minded people got together and confronted this Idiot, then maybe he will back down.Mean time he is festering in the sun over his ne move that impresses even the Martians on Mars.

March 30, 2007, 7:36 p.m.From National Geographic:
"Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun."
From MIT on Pluto:
"the average surface temperature of the nitrogen ice on Pluto has increased slightly less than 2 degrees Celsius over the past 14 years."
Since Pluto is moving further away from the Sun and continuing to warm despite that fact, it indicates that something doesn't fit into "Solar Constant" dismissal theories.
From Space.com on Jupiter:
"The latest images could provide evidence that Jupiter is in the midst of a global change that can modify temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit on different parts of the globe."

March 30, 2007, 7:38 p.m.Not only was the headline for this story sensationalized, the story itself said nothing.
But, instead of acting like flooding in low-lying lands is a big surprise and new thing brought to us by global warming, anybody remember Bangladesh in the early 70's? Didn't that country spend several years under water because of typhoons and super storms? I even remember a fund-raiser--what was it called? oh yeah, The Concert for Bangladesh. How about the Midwest, you know, the Mississippi valley-- when was that, late 1980's early 1990's?
It's all anecdotal guys. Even 150 years is just anecdotal, not dispositive given the billions of years of the earth's existence.
We should not be running around trashing the earth with abandon. Do what is feasible to clean up, but do not bankrupt yourself or the economy on this.
Must have been a hallucination, because super storms and super floods are a product of global warming.

March 30, 2007, 10:24 p.m.We just need to start worshiping "Ra", the sun again, virgin and blood sacrifices, reinstate the religious ceremonies and then it will stop with all that solar flare and other stuff trying to hurt our planet.
Right now the Sun is very angry with us and is in a bi-polar state. Once a sacrifice is made every thing will be ok, we can keep polluting, over poplulate, over farm, keep on burning fossil fuel, etc. The sun will take care of it and even make more oil for us.
