"Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki called for restraint on Friday, urging Iraqis not to allow themselves to be divided by "evildoers"."

This leader is weak and suspect. Is he really trying to stop the fighting because I haven't read anything where he has held the vigilante police group accountable.

Do not fear. The surge is working. This is only one event that needs to be taken into the context of the many thousands of events that did not occur. (Do I get a job as a speach writer?)

only an idiot with blinders on could still believe the surge is working.

again bush has made america look stupid. his rhetoric is the complete opposite of reality. talk about emboldening the enemy. every wrong step we take with bush at the helm does just that.

what a complete and utter failure bush is.

Is this why we are here??

When I say here, I do not mean in Iraq.

Iraq is an unjustified war of Mr. Bush's.

But I mean, why are we here on this earth. To perpetuate hatred and nationalism with the Islamist thinking "GOD" is relishing humans killing each other??

THINK, just for one second, Why are we here and why the antagonism among humans??

I cannot even think of one plausible answer, can you?

We are so used to a beginning and end of all things but WHY are we here??

Many questions, no answers!!! Einstein had no real answers and I will not try to apostate the answer. I will only say that the gods religous extermist espousesings make no sense whatsoever.

Man kills man and uses their religious idiom to warrant the act. I can find no answer and you can't either.

If you believe in a god you equate that god as a satanist fellow or how else can you equate our existence.

Now say I'm a fool, could care less, it still does not answer, Why??

This war is not ours, and never has been ours. Yes, we are fighting terrorist that hate us, but it didn't start out that way. The war we are fighting today is different than the war we were fighting 4 years ago. The terrorist are growing in size and anger because of the American presence in Iraq. The deaths of American's and innocent Iraqi's is unjust and unexcusable. And as we drain more energy and funding into this war, and less here at home, the terrorist cells will get stronger here in the U.S. It is insane to waste one more American life on this war. The longer it takes for us to pull out, the worse it will get. If we continue on this path, the war will end up in America. Get our troops home now, before it's too late!

It seems to me that the majority of conservative republican's only value the lives of those that are exactly like themselves. They have the inability or no desire to value anything or anyone who may be different than themselves. They strive for a cookie cutter America, where anything different than themselves, is either a sin, illegal, disgusting, or just plain wrong. That's why I consider myself to be a liberal. I want a America that's diverse, peaceful, and accepting. I don't mind who you are or what you believe, as long as you give me the same respect.

Libssuck responded to the news that one side of the Iraqi civil war inflicted on the other the greatest single destruction of the war (other than that we inflicted on all) by asking:

"Does anyone still doubt we are fighting terrorists in Iraq? Only fools support pulling out of Iraq now. Al Qaeda is desperate -- almost as desperate as liberals."

At first, I was sure this had to be tongue in cheek. No rational person could possibly be unable to recognize the absolute ridiculousness of this surge that has such effects, about 500 killed on both sides in a could days of strike, counter-strike.

Meanwhile, a simple solution that can only take place as we withdraw is as close as Iran and Syria and an UN partition of Iraq into protectorates for each of them and an independent Kurdish state with oil apportioned between all three and the people being protected as resettled in their preferred partitioned areas. All we would have to do is pay for the resettlements--

sounds more like the liberal dream, everyone walking in lockstep like the democratic congress. While conservitive enjoy diversity, the democrats pass laws to make sure we are all equal. Conservative values include the American dream, seeking and becomeing successful on ones own. not having everything handed to them on a pewter plater like the liberals want. Liberals want no rich or poor, everyone equal. sounds like cookie cutter to me.

Knight Templer seemed to gloat and cherish the possibility that some crazy Tim McVeigh types might try to take advantagesof the cultural gaps between the educated and uneducated people in this coiuntry so that we would have a civil war like that of the Theocratic Shiites versus the secularist Baathists/Sunnis now taking place in Iraq.

KT asked "Where's your separation of church and state then?"

We constitutional progressives say: "In the Constitution!"

It is precisely to avoid those sort of sectarian conflicts that no sect of any religion, pro or con, is given any right to use any money, any facilities, or any aspect of our government to gain any advantage over its opponents.

Only by keeping all from using our government5 for their religious and/or anti-religious purposes can we avoid the jealousies that lead people to kill one another over religion. We must keep that wall of separation built by Jefferson and Madison securely in place.

tiredofnonsense must have been listening to itself too long! It confuses assuming that we are all equal before the law with equal rights and equal responsibilities, etc, with seeking to make people equal: "the democrats pass laws to make sure we are all equal."

To recognize that our government was created to assure that all have equal rights to life, liberties and real opportunities foir happiness as befit our nurtured natures, is not to think that everyone either is or ought to be the same.

It is diversity and mutual respect among all of us very different equals that is the hallmark of progressives who care enough to allow people to all be their very best as long as they do not violate the rights of others or fail their equal responsibilities!

Ton nonsensibly says that "Liberals want no rich or poor,..."

While no one should use government for an advantage over others, each has rights to their own labor and products as well as responsibilities.

                                                  Hanyman:

Hope all is going well out in Green Acres. Obvously, since you generally agree with me, I generally agree with you. However, I do have one caution. You said:

"After more than two centuries, however, religion has done just fine without the support of the state."

Unfortunately, during those two centuries, religion has not always been purely without the benefit of the state. For half a century after the Revolution, state law was often slow to make the most prominent religions give up some of their advantages. Even well into the 20th century, state systems of education continued to promote certain "Christian" ideas and ideals.

And even today many so-called "Christians" have and do use various government programs to their benefits, even when the benefit is nothing more than state promotion of their prestige. May pseudo-Christians constantly seek to increase their sects' use of and power over government!
