It is refreshing to see that Angela Merkel is touring the Arab states seeking peace deals. In the words of Donald Trump, Condoleeza Rice shakes hands and waves, but never makes deals. Angela Merkel can offer the support of the EU to the people of the Middle East and serve as a broker toward peace. If the US cannot get the job done, perhaps Europe and Russia can.

In the absence of a coherent and involved peace strategy by the US for stabilization of the region, people are filling the power void by doing it for themselves; this results in solutions that are contrary to US interests. Not only does this lack of invelvement marginalize the US as a diplomatic power, it aptly demonstrates the inability of this Administration to handle more than one foreign policy problem at a time.

Maybe we need to spend a billion or two on the State Department...at least, that's what I heard Newt Gingrich say the other day.

Quoting Newt Gingrich aside, you are right. We need to spend more on the State Dept. and diplomacy. We need to make a concerted effort towards resolving conflicts in the Middle East. Like him or not, President Carter brokered one of the most significant deals in the Middle East when he brought Egypt and Israel together to work out their differences at Camp David. We need new accords between Israel and Palestine. While we are at it, we should also involve the Lebanese.

With all of the recent bloodshed in Iraq, it's obvious that the "surge" is not working to stabilize peace and accord in that geographical area. If we can't broker some peace arrangements, then I'm all for any powers that can restore some harmony in the Middle East. We've "stayed the course" and "surged" Iraq into a civil war. When does this administration finally admit that their strategies are not working?
